' NOTES ON THE RAGING.
(By Telegraph.—Special Correspondent.) " Chrlstciiurch, September 12. Glorious weather prevailed at Ashburton to-day, but tlio storm of yesterday had left its mark oil tho course, which was in. parts very heavy. Two Now Zealand Cup •candidates in Martel and Tannhauscr showed 'improved form to-day, and filled tho dividend places in the Tinwald Handicap. The former ran ill l blinkers, and fought out tlio finish well, but ho has the reputation of being a rogue, and most people 'will probably prefer Mr. J. B. Buchanan's horse, who is very well in with 7st. 61b., and ivfho looks as if two or three races would 1 do liim a lot of good. Although tho Little River sportsman has also got Tlirax engaged, Taniibaiiser is more likely to bo his representative on tho day. Mir. R. 0. Duncan officiated as Stipendiary Steward, kit his task was not a liard one.. The trainer of Nitlisdale was asked to explain' tho improved form of that horse, which he did satisfactorily. Tho chopping-out of Mav Dalrymplo iit\ tho hack race was also inquired into. Cardiff, a fresh horse, was a good favourite in tho hurdles, with .Umcraboy and Margo next in demand. The favourite gave a wretched display,'and was never in the fighting line. Jlargo and Waitoto made the early running, with the field strung out. At tho fivefurlong post Terry Fl.vnn displaced Waitoto, and was alongside Margo'. at the last fence, but foil, and Overton, coming behind, gave R.. Wilson a bad kick o"n the head. TJmcroboy came fast in tho 1 straight and beat tho tiring Margo by a length. Ribstono Pippin and Faiirlio were next. - Gold Wave and Whiz, carrying the ' colours of Mr. J. Grigg, was the bestbacked number on the machine in the hack raco. Nithsdalo also came ini for a lot of support, and in a lesser degree May Dalrympls was fancied, but tho others "wore, neglected. Nithsdata, whfi had previously shown a partiality for tlio mud, was soon in front, and led the whole way. Trireme and Debonairo ran a dead-heat for second place, and May. Dalrymplo was next. Tho lastnamed got chopped, out badly 'at the. barrio- riso. Gunflash looked well 'treated in the Coldstream Weltei", and tlio public were not slow to recogniso it. The Calibre gelding started at a short prico, and had tho raco in his keeping tho whole way. Stamboul was well clear of Joan and then eamo Sveaborg'. Tlio lasti named may show much-improved form next time lie runs. Kilts ran-very badly, and seems to havo lost his form. One of the finest finishes ever seen on this course took placo in the Tinwald Handicap, when Martel and Tannhauscr passed the post in a lino, with Medallist only a head away, and Pilgrim's Way on the latter's girths, Ladrono being next. It w.is a very close thing, and most people thought Tannhauscr, who was ■ finishing tlio faster, had won. Tho whole of the eight runners were well backed. Oxenhope was the absoluto favourite, with Medallist and Martel next, and Gold Coin the outsider. At the start tho field moved off well, but tlio superior pace of Pilgrim's Way took him-to tho front, and ho led down tho back from Medallist, well clear of Oxenhope, The Cornet, Ladronc, and Martel. Crossing the bottom Martel took third place, and Tannhauscr and Ladrono also moved up. At the distance Martel caueht Pilgrim's Way, but he had to bo ridden right out to stall off Tannhnuser and I Medallist. Pilgrim's .Way was fourth, and Ladrone fifth. After tho raco R. Berry was fined £5 for allowing Martel to cross Pilgrim's Way beforo being.the recognised two length's in front. Tlio Hack Scurry Handicap went to Formal, with Reval in second place, and Orton scored in the Farewell Handicap.
