NEW RAILWAY STATION.
CHANGES IN THE BLOCK. Tho Central Itailway Station ,was a matter on which tho Mayor (Mr. J. P. Lnko) was' approached for a statement yesterday. "As Mayor of the city." said Mr. Luko, "I intend to ask tho City Council to interest themselves in getting a definite statement from the Government at the earliest possible moment as to wlien the new Central Railway Station will be commenced. Authority will 'be required by tho council from the citizens to raise a loan to carry out the alterations in tho tramway system necessary under the scheme prepared by tho City Engineer in conjunction with the Government's engineers. These alterations will bo considerable,, as tho whole plan involves the running of a loop round past the station and an extensive lay-out for cars. Whitmorc Street will bo cloEed and tho sites of tho courts and Government Buildings combined into ono block." „ Tho Mayor added that considerable chango would bo brought about in the locality adjacent to the Telephono Exchange. So far as the exchange itself was concerned, it would be isolated, but access would be provided by a footway.
