[BY "Bollt-OFF."]

PREPARING FOR AUCKLAND. Last Saturday's Badness. 'Many liarth tilings have been muttered and written about the wretchedness of last Saturday's weather, and it wont improve it any by trying to add anything moro. Hockey players generally showed a fine enthusiasm in turning out as they did, but thoro didn't appear to bo very many reasons why tfio games should not have been postponed. Thoy weren't put off, however, and some were played and some wero not, Tho representative men wore given an opportunity of getting a little practice which, in view of tho forthcoming Auckland visit, was, perhaps, even under the circumstances, fit and proper, and quite necessary. Like all practice matches, Saturday's affair was quite uninspiring—ono team scored 7 goals, the other two. Auckland Next Week. What is usually regarded as the match of the year—Wellington v. "Wellington—will bo played on Saturday next. An endeavour is being made to obtain the uso of tho Basin Reserve for the match, which, provided the ground is in good order, is a good enough idea; Tho local men will nave another trial match to-day, and it is to bo hoped that those who are likely to compriso the team to meet Auckland will clutch tho opportunity and practice hard. The Sonlor Championship. Of interest, probably, will be the following table, .showing the positions of the teams at the finish of tho senior championship

Junior Championship. The junior championship will bo advanced another stage to-day, after which in all probability the competition mil bo declared closed. From tho tablo following it will bo seen that IvA.M.I. aire easily the premiers, while Government Insurance aro tlio "woodenspooners" with a vengeance: —

A Wellington Team Has Wonl Tho ■Wellington Club lias at last managed to sccuro first place in a clianipionship grade, and not before it was deserved. But it was only after a hard fight, with a. ti)vtop team • (Kilbimra Anglican) that they got there. Tho record of tho latter team compares well with tho winners. Kilbirnio drew jvitli •Wellington once, and lost once, all other games boina wins, scoring 87 goals and 10 against. Tic winners scorcd 83

with 7 against, won 11 games, luid draw ono. Tho same team also won the seven-a-sido tournament at tho beginning of the season, after competing with senior and junior teams. The team is an unusually strong ono for third grado, probably 'tho strongest team that has oyer competed in tlio third-class. To-day Wellington third wiill play tho winners of tho third-class championship m Canterbury—To Wliaki. Somo Cencral Jottings. _ Thompson, tlio Wellington representative player, who gave it out a U'liilo ago that lio had decided to retire, has now, it is understood, reconsidered) and altered Ms decision, and will play some more. , . ~ ' ~ , Tho Canterbury Association, which lias been handicapped considerably through lack of finances and grounds, lias decided to mate a levy on all registered players. Half of tho levy is' togo to tho ordinary funds of tho association, and tho other half will bo earmarked for tho purcliaso and upkoep of Auokland Sliield team will leavo Auckland by tJio Main Trunk express on Wednesday evening, September 17, in charge of Mr. A. E. Tattley, who uas boon appointed manager. Thirteen players will be sent, including a reserve back and a forward. Tho Auckland men will bo entertained at a smolto concert on tlio evening after .the matoli, and on tho following day (Sunday) they will probably bo-taken for a diiye. "
