PERSONAL NOTES FROM LONDON.
London, August 7. Lord Islington, speaking at tlio Chippenham Secondary School prize distribution, urged that all who enjoyed the advantages of education should be obliged during thoir school years to undergo a course of elementary physical and military training between the ages of 14 and 18. Mr. G. P. Donnelly, of Hawke'B Bay, is at present in Dublin, and shortly goes on a visit to Tipperary, his native county. ' . Mr. and Mrs. John C. Day, of Christ-, church; are in London, and return <.o New Zealand by the ltomuera on September 25. . Mr. H. Gray, of Auckland, is holidaymaking in England, after an absence of thirty-seven years m New Zealand, and returns homo on September 1. Mr. and Mrs. Howorth, of Wanganui, left last week for Now Zealand. Mr. Charles Howorth remains in England for about two months longer. Miss Elsie Kempthorno, of Dunodin, has been staying for some weeks with Mr. and Mrs. Alex. Watson, at Broughty Ferry (near Dundeo), and has now gone to Harrogate. Miss Dorothy. Griffin, of Wellington, who has been in Lancashire since she arrived in May, is now in London, and leaves for New Zealand in iSovembor. Mrs. A. Morris, of Wellington, who came to England somo weeks ago with her son, Mr. Joseph Morris, underwent a successful operation on Friday last. Mr. Fred Barkas, of Tirnaru, has just returned from a cyclo tour through England and South Scotland, and returns to New Zealand by the Niagara, leaving Vancouver on September 3. Mr. D. H. Dennehy, of Wellington, sailed by tho Imperator for New York last week. Ho will spend six weeks in tho United States, and leaves from San Francisco on September 17 i° r iNow Zealand. , Mr. and Mrs. Otto Hubener (nee Miss Cameron, of Mataura), who have been paying visits in Germany, and visiting other Continental cities, arrived in London last week, and shortly toturn to Now Zealand. . _ The Rev. G. R. Barnett, of Marlborough, who has just arrived in London, lias been appointed to tho stair or bt. Mary's, Portsea, where ho will remain for twelve months' training before returning to New Zealand. . Mr. and Mrs. Arthur E. King, of Hawke's Bay,* accompanied by thoir daughter, Miss Merle King, after spending five weeks in London, left last week for Scotland and Ireland, and return by the Orsova on October 24. Mr. and Mrs. Jounucaux, of Palmerston North, accompanied by their two daughters, Grace and Marie, spoilt some time in Devonshire, and are' now in Bournemouth golfing. They will spend tho winter in tho South of Franco. Dr. Harry Garlmg, 1' .K.C.b. (Oamaru), recently obtained the Glasgow Fellowship on special subject of diseases of car, nose, and throat. He left last. Saturday for Lincoln, to take up duties as resident surgical officer at tho hospital there. Mr. Sinclair A. Rodger, of Timaru, has just returned to London after a five weeks' motor tour through England and Scotland. Ho will probably bo in Europo about a year, visiting the Continent and returning via Suez. Dr. and Mrs. R. A. Cameron, of Wellington, and their family, luive returned to England from Scotland. After spending somo weeks at tho hospitals in London, specialising mainly in the diseases of children, Rontgen Rays, and electricity, Dr. Cameron recently took a trip to tho Continent.
