PAHIATUA NOTES

The Woodvillc Cow-Testing Association has decided to work in conjunction with tho Pahiat-ua Association. This decision was arrived at 011 Saturday, when several of tho pfficers of tho Woodvillo Association visited Pahiatua and met Mr. A. M'Farlane, chairman of tho Ballance Dairy Company, who organised, the movement in this district. The total number,of cows entered for the two associations is over 2500. Negotiations are now, proceeding with the Dairying Division of the Agricultural Department for tlhe services 011 an official tester.

Ratepayers in the Ronini riding of the Paliiatua County are reported to be subscribing liberally towards tho cost of contesting tho action of the Pahiatua County Council in increasing tho general rato of the Konini riding from Id. to ljd. A levy of 15 per cent, on all general rates paid was decided upoil at a recent meeting of ratepayers, but in many cases tho settlors liave offered to pay more than the amount if neccssaiy. Tho annual meeting of the Pahiatua Bowling Club was held on Saturday evening. Mr. G. A. Burgess presided. The following officers were re-elected: — President, Mr. G. A. Burgess; vicepresidents, Messrs. G; Moore and W. Tosswill; secretary and treasurer, Mr. J. Hughes; auditor, Mr. J. de V. Howard; General Commn'tteo, Messrs. W. Wakeman, W. Ransom, T. F. Howat, W. I. Husband 1 , and W. WhiteScott. Mcssts. Burgess, Ransom, and Howat were appointed a Match Committeei A largely-attended meeting of shareholders of the Wellington Farmers' Bacon Company, Ltd., was hold on Saturday afternoon, Mr. A. M'Farlano presiding. As a result over 200 _ additional shares were subscribed in tho room, bringing the total up to nearly 1000. The amount of fresh capital required is £2000, and it was decided to adjourn the meeting for a fortnight. In tlie meantime Messrs. Eddie and Daysh will canvass t-hc F.ketahuna and Nireaha districts, and Messrs. J. Mathews and Rummer will interview tho Mauricevillc settlors. Tho Borough Council has resolved to apply for a further grant for the protection work on the Mangatainoka River, as over £200 has been spent up to the present, and it will require at least another £200 to complcto the present scheme. "We would like the powers that be to know that the Pahiatua County Council knocked off their surfaccmen employed in the Gorge a fortnight ago, (says tho AVoodvillo paper). Tho result is tho road this end of the Gorge is rotting in a dirty state, and several large stones are lying on the surface. \ motor-cyclist striking any one of them would verv likely be hurled over tho bank into tho river. The road through the other end is in splendid condition." Accompanied by a retinue of staff officers, Commissioner Richards, tho Commander of the Salvation Armv in New Zealand, will pay his Jirst official visit to Pahiatua on Friday next. The local officer, Captain Whitcley, waited on tho Borough Council on Monday njtrht, and asked that a civic reception should be given tho Commissioner upon his arrival Tho request was unanimously agreed to.
