THE ILL-PAID TEACHER.

A STRIKING EXAMPLE. Tho poor remuneration offered te teachers would appear to liavo brought about the inevitable result. Mr. G. M. Thomson asked tho following question of tho Minister' for Education in the Houso of Representatives: "Whether ho is aware of the fact that for tho position of Scienco Teacher, in tho Wellington Training College, recently advertised, there was only ono candidate, that ho was not a University graduate, and that before applying for tho position ho first ascertained what other means ho would have of supplementing tho inudequato salary offered ?" ,

Tho Hon. J. Allen (Minister for Education) replied: "I was Jiot aware, of tho facts stated by tho hon. member, and do not know what salary tho Wellington Education Board, which has a certain amount of discretion in the matter, offered for tho position referred to. The improvement in tho salaries of cortain members of the training collego staff which I have already promised will, I hopo, lessen the evil in future. Rut thero is undoubtedly a deficiency of qualified teachers of scienco in Now Zealand at tho present time, caused to a largo extent by tho' smallness of tho number of students taking science courses in tho University."
