Most ilangaweka residents arc aware that the local power house is stopped automatically at any desired hour, by means ol' an ordinary alarm clock operating an ingenious arrangement to drop a big wooden gate in the ilnmc and cut olf the water to the turbine. Although the apparatus has worked splendidly, says an exchange, the hoard's engineer, who invented it, has been working 011 an improved idea for several months whereby the power house can be stopped at any instant from the board's ofiice, or. the engineer's house, by merely ringing an ordinary telephone. The apparatus lias been carefuly tested and is now in constant use. The alarm clock cull still be used as well, but in case of a lire in the town for instance, tho telephone is merely rung and tho town would be in darkness in !_'o seconds, thus ensuing tho fire brigade no risk of fatal shocks. • The gate which the telephone operates weighs about 3ewt.
