SOME INTERESTING REMARKS. WANGANUI FREEZING CO. ■(By Telegraph.—Special Correspondent.J V/anganul, September 10. Hopeful anticipations for tho frozen Ineat industry, especially as regards mutton a.nd lamb, wore voiced by Mr. E. A. Campbell, chairman of directors, at the annual meeting of tho iWanganui Meat Freezing Co. to-day. He remarked that tho Argentine competition was declining. Ho stated that, not only was tho Argentino export of [mutton and lamb loss this year than in tli'o past,, but tho number of sheep in ibhe country had decreased by thirty millions during tho past few years. On tho other, hand, tho Argentino export of beef, Had , increased,. and, from all reports, tho country was more fitted \for cattlo than for sheep.- A few market that would probably bo availablo in tho near' future"'was the United States. Representatives from that country were already making inquiries lierc and'in Australia. Ho did not ■think that much New t Zealand meat tho.States,, but if, as was probable, tho American meat duties woro taken off, it largo amount of Argentino meat that now went to Great liritain would go to tho States, and .that would relievo the Home market of miich Argentino competition, and be cf great, benefit to Now Zealand. Incidentally, ho remarked that sheep wero decreasing in numbers in most parts of the fforld, and only New Zealand and ■: South Africa were holding their own , last .year. In congratulating shareholders on the successful year, tho chairman stated that tho oompany paid for live stock last year a total sum of £134,051, whilo tho amount paid in wages and salaries was £25,415. Tho <"i condition' of tho meat sent Home was . reported by the company's agents as excellent and, so far, not a singlo claim for daiuago had been received. Considerable extensions to works and plant would bo undertaken during the. coming yoa'if to eopo with the increaso of • Business,, and lio hoped that shares, ! which had not so far been .taken up, 'woiild be applied for, in order to proride additional working capital. The report and balance-sheet were adopted, and votes of thanks wero passed to the directors, officers, and staff, particular mention being mado of tho way in which the staff had stood by 1 tho company during tho time of stress. . , Tho meeting also discussed the Government's new income-tax proposals, wlijeh wero denounced as unjust and inequitable as applied to companies, and passed a resolution entering an [emphatic protest against tho proposed •increase, which was . viewed as a clog 'on industrial progress.
