THE WANGANUI TOURNAMENT. (By Telegraph.—Prees Association.) War.ganui, September 9. The annual New Zealand ladies' championship hockey tournament commenced to-day in perfect weather and on a good ground. The attendance was large. Twelve teams have entered. ' The results of to-day's plav are as follow: — A Section.—Hawkc's Bay (G) beat Wanganui (2). 'Pho champions had all the best of tho game, and were never seriously troubled. At half-time the ■score was 5 to nil in Hawko's Bay's favour, but the second half was more oven. Manawatu (7) beat JBullcr (1) after a good hard, game, in which Manawatu wero superior in the circle. Canterbury (14) beat' Taranaki (nil). The southerners' forwards were too warm for Taranaki, who wero never in tho race. B Section. —Wellington (9) beat Wanganui B (nil). -The latter's team consisted of schoolgirls put in at the last niomont to fill the placo of South Taranaki, who failed to fulfil their engagements. Wairarapa (5) beat West Coast (nil). This (jamo was not noticeable for anything brilliant, being moro of a scramble. Southland (7) defeated Eketahmia (1). Tho first spell was very oven, but tho southerners demonstrated their (Superiority in the concluding stages. i I -
