At tho Police Court yesterday a Samoan named Abdullah was fined £2 for threatening conduct. Remands were granted in casus against Joseph Hannon (alleged theft of seven shirts from Garner and Garner), and Percy Whitehead (alleged breaking into the warehouse of Alex. Grant with intent). 'Whitehead was released on bail. A young woman was charged with attempting suicide by drinking poison. She was convicted 1 and ordered to como up for scntenco when called on; At tho annual meeting of tho StarrDowkett Society, Messrs. W. Hunter, G. Woodroofe, and J. S. Munro wero elected directors. Mr. R. Coker secured tile draw in No. 1 group for £300, and Mrs. C. L. Gausted £200. Mrs. C. F. Hanna was successful for £500 in No. 2 group. Miss M.. Quids,, of Palmerston, successfully passed tile Trinity College examination held at Wanganui on August 30. The attendance at tho new West End School now totals 230. A sequel to the recent comment in court that motor cyclists got their num-ber-plates so dusty as to be illegible occurred at the Palmerston Court yesterday, when a defendant, charged with passing tli,e speed limit, complained that his misfortune was due to his having kept his number-plate clean. Many motor cyclists, 'lie said, smeared tho plate with grease, so that the dust would accumulate on it. MASTERTON. The estate of the late Mr. J. C. Alpass, at'Alfrcdton, containing about 3000 acres, is to ba subdivided for closer settlement by tho Public Trustee, who is administering it. There will be three or four farms, varying in size from 500 acres to 900 acres, and these will he disposed of at auction. Capital entries have been received for the Masterton Horticultural Society's Spring Show, which is to be held on Thursday. CARTERTON. Writing to Mr. H. H. Wolters, at Carterton, from Nukualofa, Mr. C. J. Jury, formerly of Ponatahi, states that they have tho smallpox scare there in a very severe form. Ships are not allowed to berth, and cannot land passengers or cargo except oil the quarantine island.' The mails are carefully fumigated, and people consider themselves lucky to get any news at all. AH stores have gone up, and the natives are hard put to it to find money and food. Continuing his letter, and writing with reference to New Zealand matters, Mr. Jury says: "I was very pleased to seo that the 'Grand Old Man,' Sir Walter Buchanan, had a first-class Highland welcome —ho is. worthy of it." Word has been received. here of the serious illness .in the Hamilton Hospital of Mr. W. Hart. Mr. Hart is well, known ill Carterton.
