MAGISTRATE'S COURT.

HUTT ROAD SPEEDS. MOTORISTS AND THE BY-LAWS. In the Magistrate's Court yesterday J. Martindale was fined £-1, with costs, for motoring at Lower Hutt in excess of the speed limit. The decision was given in a reserved judgment by Dr. M'Artliur, S.M. At the hearing of the case Mr. A. piair appeared for the prosecution, and Mr. E. J. Fitzgibbon tor Martindalo. Mr. Fitzgibbon had asked tliat the case should be struck out on the ground that t'ho council had not adequately proved the by-laws,, but his Worship had come to tho conclusion that this point could not be upheld, and he gave judgment against Martindale. CARRIERS' CLAIM. J. O'Brien and Co., carriers, Welling-, ton, claimed £22 lis.. 6d. from David Lewis O'Donnell as for the packing and removal of. furniture to Auckland. O'Donnell counter-claiincd £18 on account of goods allegod to' have been damaged, and £10 12s. oh account of the property which it was stated was not delivered. • Mr. W; H. D. Bell appeared for the plaintiff, and Mr. A. Blair for the defendant. Judgment was reserved by Dr. M'Arthur, S.M. MUNGAROA CASE. James Duff Cruicksbank and Archibald Allan Thomson, both of Wellington, claimed from Robert Edward Parker, of Mungaroa, £15 as for rent of the land. Parker counter-claimed £10 Is. as for work done and materials supplied in connection with the improvement of tho dwelling on the property. Mr. W. G. Riddell, S.M., who heard the case, reserved decision. UNDEFENDED DEBTORS. In the following cases judgment was entered by Dr. M'Arthur, S/M., for the plaintiffs by default: —William Allan v. O'Connor and Fuller, £10 lis. 10d., costs £1 10s. 6d.; R. G. Dun and Co. v. Arthur Brooker, £2 13s. 10d., costs 10s.; John Norton v. C. Goodin, £4 Is. 7d., costs 10s.; R. G. Dun and Co. v. George Marshall, £1 7s. Id., costs 55.; same v. George H. Hall, £6 Bs. lid., (iosts £1 ss. 6d.; same v. William H. Palmer, £2, costs 10s.

JUDGMENT DEBTORS. William Allan was ordered to pay Charles Maddock' £3 18s. 4d. by September 3. POLICE LIST. (Before Mr. W. G. Riddell, S.M.) George Bryant was fined £2 for having assaulted William Boulton. Fourteen dayß' imprisonment was imposed on Joseph Johnson Smith, who stole four scrubbing brushes belonging to Robert Kirkpatrick. Georgo Hunter received a sentence of ono month's imprisonment, and John Power a sentence of threo months' imprisonment for the theft of 30s. worth of singlots from William Meston's shop. Harry Freeman Brenchloy was remanded to appear at Eltham to-morrow on a charge of his having obtained £6 16s. by false pretences from Albert Smyth.
