THE TRIP OF THE OTAGO BOYS. Saturday's rain did not make for good Soccer. Tho principal match was that between an Otago "boys' -touring team and a AVellington Fifth Division team. After a mud scramble on tho Basin Reservo, tho visitors left tlio field-winners by 3 goals to 1. A Marlborough boyareprosentativo team woro to havo played a Wellington boys' team, but the visitors did not appear on tho field. In consequence of the defection a scratch match was played between Porirua Division toam (this year's champions) and'tho Wellington School representatives. Tho gamo had to be abandoned at half-timo on account of tho weather, the scoro then being—»Porirua, 2 goals: AVellington, 1 goal. Brooklyn United wero decisively beaten by Hospital in the Charity Cup competition by 10 goals to nil. By winning this match. Hospital aro in tho semi-final for tlio Charity Cup. THE OTAGO BOYS. THEIR COMBINATION TELLS. Tho Basin Roservo was tho sceno of tho match betweon Otago and AVellington Fifth Division representatives, this' being tho third occasion on which, theso two provinces havo met. Despito tho sodden and slippery state of tlio ground, tlio match was a good exhibition of tho "Soccer" codo, and thero is no doubt had tho weather been fino a splendid gamo would havo been tho result. The teams wero as follow:—Otago: Goal, Edwards; full-backs, Duncan, Collins; halves, Henderson, Dawson, Muirhoad; forwards, Kennedy, Thompson, Tarleton, halves, Murio, Bell, FitzGerald; forwards, Halley, Mooney, Manloy, Lissington, and Owons. In tho first spell AA'ellington kicked off against tho wind, and for tho first fivo minutes t'ho play was up and down the field until Jlanldy got away and centred to who placed the ball behind tho line. At this stago Owens was prominent, and tho Otago goalkeeper saved .three shots in succession splendidly. Play was now transferred to the other end of tho fiold, and Boesloy saved a good shot from Shepherd on tho right wing. Givc-and-tako play was now tho order. From a passing rush, Thompson scored tho initial goal of tho match, tho scoro being—Otago, 1; AYellington, 0. lie spell ended without furthor scoro, tho good defence of Duncan and Collins nullifying all Wellington's endeavours. In the second half, Wellington had the wind, but failed to take advantago of it, and mis-kicking by Gledhill let his team down time after timo. Mooney, insido right for tho local lads, was successful in notching a goal, making tho scoro ono all. From this on the Otago team played with great combination against tho wind, and showod themselves to be faster and moro experienced than tho AVellington boys. Tho visitors wero successful in adding two moro goals to their total, through tlio agency, of AV. Duncan and Kennedy, thus making the scoro 3 —l in Otago's favour. For tho southern boys, Shepherd played well on tlio wing. Henderson and Edwards also showed to advantage. For tlio AVellington lads, Bocsley, FitzGerald, Parrant, Owens, and Mooney wero prominent. Mr. F. O'Connell was referee. After tho match both teams were entertained by tho Y.M.C.A. Boys' Depa'rtmont, to hot tea at tho association's rooms. O'Connell. An apology was received from Mr. A. AVilliams (secretary of tho AVellington Football Association). Votes of thanks wero passed to Mrs. Stephenson and Miss Frascr for the arrangements made. Tho Otago team leaves for tho south this evening by tho AVahine. They will play a match against tho Burnhaml School on Tuesday. HOSPITAL & BROOKLYN UNITED. With sodden ground underfoot, and with tho rain teeming down unceasingly, tho Hospital and Brooklyn United clash at Porirua resembled water polo 'moro than "soccer." Hospital, a better team in all' respccts, and playing on their own ground, had no difficulty in vanquishing their opponents. Brooklyn United put up a feeble defence, their ono strong man being Belhamic, between tho posts. In the first ha'f Skinner, Hughes, and Heath rattled on four goals' among them, and in tho second spell, With the aid of Roots, these men added another six, tho final scores being:—Hospital, 10; Brooklyn United, nil Mr. Dulfy was refereo. (By Telegraph—Pr<«3 Association.) 1 Christchurch, vSoptembor 7. After winning the Brown Shield from Wellington oil August 6, Canterbury turned out on Lancaster Park to play ' tlieir first challengers—Manawatu—who - , brought down a strongly representative - ' team.. The Rod and l Blacks set the game • i in motion, and, very shortly, Norman ' 3 had a weak tiy at goal from a pass by r Bissett. _ A free-kick to the Reds set tlie.m going on a good return, but the Greens presently became aggressive. A quick return gave Taylor a fair run, tlio t ball, however, going over. A good attempt by Tanner also went over. Hearsay and Perry then looked like get-, ting through, but found Clay in theiT i partli. A bad miss by M'Farlano lot Perry through, A. Fuilartoii clearing, and another hot one from Fanner just got over. From the kick Bissett got possession, and, passing .to Taylor, Caiv terbury woro one up, tlio goalkeeper having no chance. Tho Reds wero not long in having auothof try, Taylor putting ono past from a good position, i Canterbury, 2; Manawatu, nil. From t tlio kick-off. tho Greens became aggiesi sive,-only to be forced back, and then ■ Bissett was unfortunate, as an off-side - ruling against Ward robbed tho Reds a of ii likely opening. A back' charging " reliovcd tho pressure on tho Greoifs' J defencoj and play was transferred to s Canterbury twenty-five, when Hearstay - was pulled up for a doubtful ort-side. l A. great shot by Ward had W'agstaif in i difficulties, and a scramble in front of : 3 the goal finished with an olf-sido ruling.. ■ 0 Tanner again tricked'the defence, but i 0 put the ball over tlio bar.. Shortly after ; 3 this a pass from Norman to Bissett saw - tho latter player making no mistake. : - Canterbury, 3—o. Within a few mimitoa ■ - Taylor passed l to Tanner who trans- ; . ferred to Bissott, who' again gave tlio 1 1 Green 'keeper no chance. 4 —o. Mana. 1 watu now had l a look in, but found the 1 Rod defence as safe as a rock. Great combination, was being shoipi by 'tlio Canterbury forwards, and tries at goal 1 woro frequent. Give-and-take play wan tho order of tho remainder of tho first f spell, which terminated: Canterbury, 4 - goals; Manawatui. nil. s - Tho second spell saw the Reds again 3 aggressive, Wagstaff being early call3ed upon to handle. Good work by , Fullarton, Norman, and Taylor was • j spoiled by olf-sido play. Canterbury t again attacked, but this sortie resulted 1 in a corner, which gavo tho G'rcon for--3 wards' a great chance, Hearsay and - .Bevis nearly getting through. Bevis • land Robinson woro the next, to bo • prominent, and looked like getting ' through ■ repeatedly. Nothing, how- - over, was gained, tlio Red and Black - halves proving too strong. Deltaso, getting away, passed to Perry, who f transferred to Hearsay, who found Tupo o on watch. Y\'ard then had a great 0 run. Returning to tho attack, a iniss .- by Sloobridge gave another chanco which 1 went a-begging. Canterbury again g pressing tlio Greens had to cede a cor- - ner, which was moderately placed by - Ward, but, tlio ball getting to Norman, o Wagstaff was again beaten. Canter- ] bury, s—o. A good run by Robinson t brought tho Greens _ well upj but Perry d put tho shot past. ' Somo pretty passii nig was now indulged in by tho Red 3 forwards, Bissett and Norman being i. most prominent. Bissott, tricking i, several opponents, "let go" only to sco s tho liall glido off tho post on tho wrong side. This was followed bv a great e effort by Tanner, which might have been f headed through by Taylor, but the lats tcr misjudged tho flight of tho hall. Tho Greens now seemed to havo "had - enough of it," and rarely crossed tlio o half-way lino. Plav by Ward gavo 0 Norman a chanco, and ho put in a great 1 .shot when facing his own goal—a wons dorful screw-kick, which, however, ii found Wagstalf on tlio watcli. Bissott o presently passed to Norman, who waded o through, simply niacins tlio ball in tho . net.' G—o. Tlio next scoro was nut e on by Tanner, who, racing the full 0 length of tho field, finished up by pnt--1 ting tho ball in tho net. 7—o.
