ROWING.
o (By "Mercury.") 1 ARNST TAKES UP THE SCULLS. His Gamp at Abbotsford. Both contestants in tho big raco on tho Parraniatta for tbo championship of Australia', the "liofereo" Cup and a stake of £200 asido are now in hard training. A recent issuo of tho Sydney ' "Sun" contains tho following particu- : lars of how and whero tlio men aro doing their preparation:— • ■ " 'Dick' Arnet is now camped at Peter Kemp's boatshed at Abbotsford, and will bo under the direct control of tlio veteran during his preparation for his raco with J. Paddon. 'Alf 1 Felton telegraphed Arnst stating that ho would leavo the Richmond River by tho first steamer and join tho camp. Tho exworld's champion is doing two rows daily over tlio full course, and is far from being right out of form. Many peoplo aro of the opinion that it is not possible for Arnst to get fit by November 1. But Arnst has been in hard ' training for many weeks. In another eight or nine weeks ho should bo row- ' ing up to championship form. With Felton in his camp ho should mako great headway with his work, for up to tlio present he has not had tho assistauco of a really last man. P. Haunan has had a-few rows with Arnst, but never attempts covering tlio full course with liim. Each time .that tlioy have been out together a start has been mado at Rydo Bridge, and when Gladesville has been reached Hannan pulls off tho courso and allows Arnst to go alono an far as tho monument. From thero he 1 goes to Kemp's shed, mid is taken in ; hand by tlio ex-world's champion, i Arnst is using a boat built by Kemp, i and tlio latter has already finished tho ■ shell which tho challenger will row in , for tlio Australian championship.. 1 i His Rival's Preparation. j "Liko Arnst, Paddon will be qunr- , tcred at Abbotsford (continues tho ( "Sun"). He is duo to roach Sydney next 'Monday, and will commence ( training operations right away. Mr. George Seil'ert has mado arrangements ' for the champion's accommodation, and . lias engaged a pace-maker and a trainer to look after him. The camp will be 1 under tho care of Harry Floyd. According to private advices received j from tho Richmond River, Paddon is J a much better sculler now than when ' iio won tlio Australian championship \ from 'Alt' Felton. For tlio past month J ho lias had the services of Harry Floyd < as adviser, and the champion has now J a much bettor style and gets a lot more J paco out of tho boat. 11 Paddon is j going to do bettor than he did when ' we last saw him on tlio Parraniatta i River, and Arnst is at his best, then the raco for tho Australian championship on November 1 will bo a inemorablo one."
