After pratique has been prantod dn the stream tlip lonic will berth at the King's Wharf. lIAHENO'S EXPECTED ARRIVAL. By wireless last evening the Union Company's Mahcno, which i§ en route from Sydney, to Auckland, advised thvat she wag expected to arrivo at tho northern port at 7 a.m. to-morrow. Tho southern portion of tho vessel's mails should., therefore-, arrive in Wellington by Monday afterlioon/e Main Trunk express. . 1 STEAM CALLS AT BLTJFF. Since tho disorganisation of tho intercolonial sorvico ordinary Blijif mils liavo been more honoured in the breach than the observance. It was proposed that both. the Wianrimoo and Jfoeraki should proceed from Dunodin diroct to HobaTt and ITelbourmc. Then atrangemcnts were made by. which northern cargo was to bo eottt soutli by the Taiuwora and transhipped to the Bluff. Since then, howovor, tho Union Company has decided that both tho Wa.rrimoo and ilocraki shall call at tho Bluff instead of proceeding from Dunedin diroct to Hobart and Melbourne. Cargo and passengers for Bluff, Hobart, and Melbourne wemt Bouth by tho Victoria laflt evening, and this vessel will connect with tho Wairrimoo at Dunedin. The Moeraki was to have resumed running on September 14, but her dcpaTturo from Dunedin has now been postponed till Monday, Septomber 16, when she will sail for the Bluff, Hobart. and Melbourne. Litoading' pa,sscnger3 from Wellington will thus be able to travel from Wellington by tho Monowai, which leaves for Lyttelton and Dunedin on Soptember 12, and connect with the Moeraki at the last-mentioned port. , ' MBSS-TABLE GOSSIP. . Captain Gillmaji, of tho Shaw-Savill stoamer Matatua is on a brief visit to Wellington. ij A link im the maritime history of the past and present was broken loot week by tho death of Captain Alexander Eagleton at his daughter's residence at Devonport, Auckland. The deceased was a very old colopiet, being engaged in the early 'fifties in trading on tho New Zealand coast. He gavo up following the isea about twentvllve years ago, and was shortly after selected caretaker of Calliope Dock, whoro ho romainod untiil Jannary of this year, \vhs,n falling healthy forced him to give up li in work. ' Mr. Bagloton had reached li-is eighty-sixth year, and leaves a widow, four daughters and -three sons. Mr. G. B. Hoddinott, third officer of tha Monowai, and Mr. J. M'A. Nieol, third officer of the Tarawera, have exchange positions. Mr. A. R. Wiickes has joined tlio Kittawa as chief engineer vice Mr. W. J. Arnott, who has eomo a.shoro for instructions. Captain C. Roberts, of tho'Shaw-Savill stoamer lonic has remained. at London " this trip on account of ill-health, and Captain C. B. Starclc, R.N.R., has taken chareo of tho linea- pro tem. Caiptain Starek-wap - in command of tho Covic when she visited Wellington some years back., Prior to that ho was an- officer on the odd lonie. The collier Wihangape will probably clear r Wellington, for Newcastle to-day. Sbo i. loads back at the New Soutli Wales nort for here. ® Tho new light draught river steamer for i the Onehunga-Wlaiulm service was success- * fully launched at tho Maniufciu on Wednes- r day. There was no official ceremony, but < a number of interested spectators watchod proceedings. Tho vessel wemt away smoothly from tho skids, and taking the water well floated out- on an even- keel. She is a twin tunnel boat, has two decks and a Bun dock, and will carry passengers only. The veesol was built at Homo by tho Thornoyoroft .Shipbuilding Company and sent to Now Zealand in pieces. Messrs. Masscy Bros, carried out the work of rebuilding. Tho' steamer will make her first trip ia tho new sorvico on Novembar 1. John-, s.s., 'is duo at Wellington from Nydia Bay to-day. Departure will be taken for Dunedin on Monday. , The Taviuni proceeds direct from tho. south.to Westport this trip, omitting tho' ' usual call at Wellington and Now Plymouth. The Corinna, which is diuo hero from tho south on Wednesday next, will tale New Plymouth cargo. _ "It was recently reported (says tho Svd- J iiey "Shipping List") that speculation was . rifo as to how the s.e. Beaehy would faro on tho Pacific Slope, she' not being provided iwith' a wirtiloss equipment and under tho American law beinj liable to detention in conseaucnco, an she carried " such a largo crew. Thoso that have followed the matter will, therefore, bo pleased to learn that Captain Turner has found a 'way out," and not by talking, but simply by exercising a little ingenuity. When his command arrived on the 'Sound' to commonco loading for Sydney, ho simply 1 sent half his crow to British Columbia, thare to await instructions, which in due course came, and were to the effect that I he would Heave tho loading port with tW> men ho had retained, proceed to the given j base and pick up the remainder, then 6team off to Sydney." As tho law referred r to was enacted to safeguard life at fea, jubilation over its ovaeion by a responsible officer is quit©'a, new. departure, I Tho world's loading recoTd is claimed for the stoamier Corey, which in reported to have been loaded with 11,000 tons of iron oto at Lake Superior ia.39 minutes a few months ago.
