(By Telegraph—Prcee Association.) 4 COURT HOLIDAYS & LITICANTS. Dunetlin, September 5. At tho Supreme Court, Sir Joshua Williams disallowed an appeal in tho case Patrick Crowe v. Annie M'Watt. The point raised by tho defence was that notice of appeal had not been given within the seven days prescribed under i!io provisions of Section 303 of tho Justices of the Poace Act. Eight; days had been allowed to elapse before notico of appeal was filed. Appelant's contention was that, included in the eight days thus reckoned, was a Supremo Court holiday, but his Honour ruled that, for tho purpose of tho statute, the holiday was none other than A public holiday. DEAL IN CHAFF. Clsborne, September 6. At tho Supremo Court to-day Corry and Co., of Blenheim, appealed against the decision of tho magistrate awarding Herbert Stephen Liddell £140 damages m respect to a chaff deal. Appellants contended that tho contract was made with an infant, tho respondent being under 21 years, and was therefore null and void. 'l'hoy also contended that the damages assessed were excessive. After argument, judgment was rcserved. CHAFF AND OTHER THEFTS. Blenheim, September 5. Philip Joseph Newport, Wil» liam ..Black, and -Charles .Stephenson, woro charged at the Magistrate's Court' to-day with theft from Dalgoty's store, and with receiving stolen goods. Newport pleaded guilty to stealing half a ton of chaff and a sack of cowgrass seed. ' Black was charged 1 with the theft of a bag o£ cowgrass seed and with reoeiving samo knowing that it was stolen. His defence was that lie had ordered: a sack of fowl fecdi, and. the grass seed had been sent in mistake. Stephenson) pleaded; not guilty to receiving twelve bags of chaff, knowing them to have been stolen, His defenco was that ho had bought tho chaff from Newport ill good faith: The Magistrate accepted tho explanation, and discharged Stephenson. Sentences on the other accused were deferred till to-morrow. MEN OUT OF WORK. < Timaru, September 6. Between 100 and 200 men who aro out of work waited qn the, Mayor of Timaru this morning. Some bitter remarks were made by tho men, who gave very"low average earnings. Tho Mayor promised to bring the matter before tho council on Monday. At present casual work is reported to bo very slack, and tk<jro is not much doing u shipping. NEW LICHT ON OLD CRIME. Auckland, September 5. Workmen engaged in cleaning out th| ornamental lakelets in tiho Domain grounds during the past day or two found themselves against the backwash of tho burglary epidemic which held sway for several weeks about a c^ r ago. After ruuning off tho water, tftio men found, embedded in tho mud, two cash boxes. The boxes had been forced open, and appearances indicated that they had been in tho water for a, lengthy poriod. Inside ono of tuo boxes woro cheque-butts, bearing the name of tho Taupo Totara Timber Com* pa.ny. A burglary was perpetrated at 1 the company's office about a year ago. BRIEF MENTION. Blenheim, September 5. A .seven-roomed houso ; owned by tlw Maiher Estate and occupied by T. koating, was destroyed by firo at 4.30 tl»8, morning. Frank Buettuer, an elderly man, pleaded guilty, and was remanded to the Supremo Court for senteiico, for assault on two girls under seven years
