>J . I THE HERO OF MAIWAND. By Tckrraph—Press Association—Copyright (Eec. September 5, 9.35 p.m.) London, September 6. Major-General Sir John Ramsay Slado, tho hero of Maiwand, is dead, aged 70. Tlio newspapers contain hearty appreciation of his services to tho nation. Maiwand, a village of Afghanistan, 50 miles north-west of Kandahar, is notable iu history for the defeat inflicted on a British brigado under General Burrows by Aynb Khan oil July 27, ISSO, during the second Afghan campaign. Burrows was deserted by the native troops, the British were completely routed, and had to thank tho apathy of tho Afghans for oscaping total annihilation. . General (then Captain) SI ado was in command of tho E Battery B Brigado during the action. Thb defeat necessitated lord Roberts's famous march from Kabul to Kamdchftr. In other campaigns General Slade also served with distinction. He was A.D.C. to Oueen Victoria, and gentleman usher to King Edward VII and King George V. JOHN GIBB DUNLOP—ENGINEER. London, September 5. John Gibb Dunlop, who was once ' suporintendmfi-engiiioer to the Orient Company, and who introduced triple expansion onpines in tho Australian service, is dead.
