Ashburton, September 4. • The Selwyn Licensing Committeo tfl. day granted a conditional liconse for a publican's booth at tho spring meeting of tho Ashburton Racing Club, to bo held on September 11 and 12. This will be tlio first timo in eleven years that a licensed booth has been on tho racecourse. Tlio racecourso was formerly _ in Ashburton electorate, but is now in Solwyn, which is a licensed district. No objection was lodged against tho application. Sergeant Emorson stated that ho wa6 of opinion that if tlio sale of liquor was legalised the conditions would certainly be worse tlian under tho present system. Tho chairman (Mr. Baily, S.M.) said tho committeo was of opinion that tho license should bo granted, but it had to bo borne in mind that tlio committee's action, was not to be construed into a precedent. Tlio thing was on its trial, and would bo watched very carefully in- ' deed. He thojight Mr. Halliday (the li- ; censee) would seo that the law was duly ■ carried out. Publio opinion, has been considerably . aroused concerning recent business be- ' foro tho Supremo Court, and tho calling of a public meeting is freely suggested. Those approached, however, suggested waiting to seo what action tho Law Society will take. The council of tho Law Society discussed tho matter yesterday and decided to refer it to a general meeting of tho Law Society on Friday next.
