STOPPED ON THE WAY FOR DOCTOR.
■ —- HATAITAI TUNNEL SCHEME. The construction of a traffic tunnel through Mount Victoria was advocated before the City Council last night by a deputation from tho Hataitai Municipal Electors' Association. In putting, the caso for the deputation Mr. Leigh Hunt said that on Sunday last a number of Hataitai residents walked through the tunnel to church., and that their names were taken by a corporation officer. - Tho Mayor said that the officer was put on to tally the number walking through, so as to . assist the Tramway Board hi deciding whether a car should be put on at that hour or not. Mr. Hunt- then stated that the officer had blocked a man who wanted to go through, for medical assistance for his wife. To this the Mayor said that tho officer should only have counted tho people. As'to the , main question, the Mayor suggested that the Hataitai Association should lay their views before tho Tramway Committee of the council, which was about to..'go into the question. He observed that a number of councillors wore in sympathy with tho tunnel . scheme.
