CIVIC AFFAIRS.

— « MEETING OF THE COUNCIL. •The City Council met last night. Tho Mayor (Mr. J. P. Luke) presided, and theve were present, also, Councillors R. Fletcher, J. E. Fitzgerald, A. H. Hindmarsh, R. A. Wright, M. F. Luckio, E. Tregear, J. Fuller, L. M'Kenzie, W. J. Thompson,. A. R. Atkinson, H. Buddie, J. Godber, G. Frost, W. H. P. Barber, and T. C. A. Hislop. Xhe Finance Committee reported that they had reconsidered tho matter of the drainage required to remedy the stagnant water nuisanco at property situated in Seatoun Road and Kilhirnie Crescent, and that they were of opinion that as responsibility for carrying out this work was' with tho owners, tho corporation should not consent to construct tho drain. The engineer's estimate of the cost of the drain was approximately £40. It was resolved: "That in view of the number of claims recently mado from various persons for the payment of plumbers' accounts for clearing corporation sewers, the council declino to pay such accounts, unless tho plumber or person ooncerned notifies the corporation immediately when he is callcd to do the work." This, it was added, would enable a corporation employoo to be present, and to ascertain if the obstruction occurs in tho main sower, thus preventing unnecessary work being done, and additional expenso incurred. Notices aro to be served on the owners of the laud at M'Kenzie Terrace to enablei the sewer to be extended from Maurice Terrace to M'Kenzie Terrace, and tho city engineer has been authorised to carry out tho necessary extension. The council decided that two properties purchased for tramways oxtension (one in Ohiro Road, and the other in Brougham Streot) Bhould be disposed of, and the proceeds placed to the credit of tho tramways capital account, and tho moneys utilised in developing tho tramways undertaking.
