A NOVEL CONFERENCE.

AMATEUR OPERATIC SOCIETIES. Of conferences in Wellington there is no end, and the latest to be announced is rather a novel one. Representatives of all the amateur operatic societies are to bo invited to meet in conference in Wellington during November "to discuss matters of mutual interest." Nearly every town of any size in Now Zealand has its amateur operatic society, and very creditablo performances they often provide. Tho range of light operas suitable for performance by amateurs is necessarily restricted and as it sometimes happens that several societies produce the same opera within a year or two, quite independently, the object of tho conference will be to arrive at a working basis as to tho sue■ceecling year's programme of each, and endeavour to arrango for tho interchange of music, scenery, dresses, etc., on an equitable basis. Such an arrangement, it is calculated, will be in the interests of tho public, as it will mean that tho cost of a production will bo spread out, will consequently bo cheapor to each society, and, therefore, will en-' ablo each society to produco inoro elaborately than is at present tho case. Tho -first confcrenco is to bo • held during tlio Wellington Amateur Operatie Society's season of "The Goisha" at tho Opera House.
