MANUKA FROM SYDNEY. . The Manuka arrived in the stream from Sydney direct at 7 a.m. yesterday, an<l berthed at the Quoen's Wharf No. 1 North. Departure was taken from tho New South Wales port at 2 p.m. on Saturday last, and for the major part- of tho voyage ■'across the Tasmon moderate to smooth .gcos, with fiue weather, were experienced. The vessel brought a large general cargo to put out at this'port, including 3200 cases of fruit and transhipments ex the following steamers:—Polyncsien, Uganaa, Aorangi, Cooma, Harburg, Liueburg, Inaba Maru, Pammern, Grieswald, and Wyandra. Tho Manuka lof Wellington lor Lyttelton last evening. Sho returns here to-morrow morning, and leaves for Sydney direct at 5 p.m. APARIMA DUE SATURDAY. It is anticipated that tho Aparima, which is en route from Calcutta, Siugapore, and Samaranga to Wellington, will leave Auckland this evening. She should be heve on Saturday evening or Sunday morning. After output at southern ports, Ihc vessel will lcavo Port Chalmer<? about the middle of this month for Newcastle to load coal for Java or Singapore. Further proof of the expansion of trade between Australasia and the United Kingdom is olFered this week by the news' of tho now tonnage under order. No fewer than six voi^els—two combined nasfieii'ger audi cargo liners and four purely (•arriers—are under construction for the Federal ajid Shire services, and now it ia learned that in addition to tho . Star of Victoria, due to corac forward at an early date, and'about which many particulars havo already appeared, a new steamer is nearins complstion in the United Kingdom for the services carried on by the Ty<>er Line. So far only the most mcairro details arc available regarding this latent vessel, which will bo a sister ship to tho Star of Victoria; bub it is understood that she .will bo of about 10,000 tons register, and be capable of steamin;? from 12 to 14 knots per hour. Sho will be essentially a cargo 'steamer, and have plenty of spaco for refrigerator freight. Her equipment will be mo&t' complete, nnd of' the most modern type, so that tho handling of cargo can be carried on with tho greatest dispatch. The name selected for the new steamer is Star of England—a name already associated, with tho company's service, for until recently they had a Star of England, but she was disposed of—and Captain Ulyatt, who is at in chargo of the Star of Australia,, will sunervise tho final stages of construction. It is anticipated tliat he now Star of England will be ready for service about March or April neit. NEW F. AND K/ LINERS. SIX VESSELS BUILDING. It has transpired that the •V. and S. fleet trading to Australian and New Zealand ports from the United Kingdom is to bo strengthened by no fewer than six new vessels, all of which are in dillerent Gtajrco of construction. • The two most important are to be from.lo.oCo to 12,0C0 tons register, aud of ■similar design to tho Argyllshire, Wiltshire, and Shropshire, being specially adaptod for both tho passenger and cargo traffic. They aro being built in British yards, as also i« one of the other four, which ar<* to bo cargo vessels of a very high class, and with large refrigerator spaee. The "other three cargocarriers are builtins at Dunkirk, but will receive the machinery in the United Kingdom. As far as can be gathered, no namea have been 'selected as- yet, - nor has any announcement been made as to the date they will bo ready, for servico. MESS-TABLE GOSSIP. Mr. W. M'N. It is expected that the vessel will get away for southern ports on Saturday. A heavy south-went gale detained the Government steamer Uincmoa at the BlniF yesterday. Tho alteration which is also contemplated to be made to other of the older steamers of the company means the cutting out of the lirst saloon, to make more accommodation for the other two clause?, which will be made more comfortable in consequence.
