At, this stage the forwards on both sides were putting in some fino stick work, and from a passing rush started by Parrant, the Petono forwards presently had tlio play in Hui llui's circle, and Howo finished up bj finding the net. A hockey match was played to-daj between Canterbury and Hawke's Bay, and resulted in a win for tlio former by two goals to one. The vfsiiors opened the attack immediately after the bullyoff, and, within a couple of minutes, Throp (Canterbury) shot a goal from tho edgo of tho circle, the ball going over tho goal-keeper's head. Canterbury continued to attack,' but the strong hitting of. tho local backs turned the tables. Several chances to score were lost by Jones (Hawko's Bay) through over-eagerness, but eventually lie succeeded in dribbling the ball into the net, thus equalising tho scores. The gamo for the rest of the first spell was fairly even. Tho visitors started well in tho second half, and looked dangerous on several occasions, but tho defence ol Hawke's Bay full-backs was good, Half-way through this spell Throp added anotlier goal for the visitors aftei a good passing rush. Tlio gamo then lagged for a time, until tho local men became earnest. Tho forwards played well, and woro always attacking,- but mistakes and tho clever defence of the Canterbury backs prevented any furtliei -score. On the wliolo, tlio local team liad tho best of the gamo, and were unfortunate in not scoring on several occasions. Tlio visitors wcro entertained at dinner after tho match, and later at a smoko concert.
