NOTES ON THE RACING.

(By Tolosxaph.—Spccial Correspondent.! Palmerston, September 3. A heavy galo blew all day, the going was very dead, and the racing was full of surprises. The big handicap went to Otahu, who was allowe'd to pay a false prieo. A record dividend for tlio Dominion was paid on Whakapona, who filled, second plac-o in the Electric Handicap. Incidentally ifc may bo mentioned that this race was run in much faster time than tho Open Flying Handicap. Pikiwai, Tirohanga, and Crispineer were withdrawn from tho Hack Hurdles*, leaving a field-of 15 runners. Bill, with W. Young im tho saddle, was tlio best backed, but tlvoro werea good many tor Witched, Sam Pan, Katun, and Aha. At tho start Stoney Falls whipped round and lost a lot of ground. 'Racing to tho first feuco Witched and Rill wcro together, but, entering tlie straight, Katna took charge, and led to the five furlongs, whero -Rill raiL to tho front, but Witched, 'Daisy Paul, and Merric Valet were in her wake. Witched joined Rill at tho last fence and, the favourite tiring, Witched rart in an easy winner. Daisy Paul was two lengths away, and ?,ferric Valet was fourth. Aha ran badly, and was in the rear the whole way. Sam Pan, who was fancied by his connections, also failed to show up. He was in a. good enough position In the earlier part of the race, but finished iil'tli. As was fully anticipated, Bonnie Helen saw a short price- in the Maiden Plate, and the "good thing" materialised. The Honiform lilly took charge at the end of a furlong, and, at one part, had a chain break on the field. Down the back Sleigh Pell, Rtyrax, and Adelieia were nearest to the leader. Entering the straight the leader was pulled back,, but she won with her head on her chest by several lengths. Ecwi Poto, a good-looking colt by Maniopoto, finished very fast, and got second money. Styrax, Adelicia, and Sleigh Bell were tho next to finish. Cold Crest, who has done a couple, o! seasons in tho paddock, made, his reappearance in tho Railway Handicap. He looked on the big side, but showed pace for about half a mile. Knniki and Altear divided the favouritism. At the start Expect, on the fence, got cut out-', and was sent back last. Morton and Gold Crc?.t led from Altear and Lady Georgia, but the Kara mil gelding losl his position at tho half-mile post. As tho straight was entered Kaniki tool; 1 charge, and Royal Simon also moved up, but ran verv wide when it came - to finishing, is'othing had a chance with Royal Simon, who won. very comfortably from Knniki. Morton was close up, and tikon camo Lady Georgia and

Smilax. The winner is now a much better horso than ho was last season, and should score again shortly. The Hunt Oup did riot bring out a goodl lot of hunters, and, on public form, Gondolier stood above the others. Tho public niado -Mr. E. Short's geld- | ing a short-pricofl favourite, and, taking . charge early, ho led throughout, and - won by a hundred yards. I'ylos and • Consul, the two placcd horses, were the J only others to finish. Hiamoo and Add- | nought, carrying Mr. M. Bull's colours, wore both running well in second 1 place 1 when they fell at the sod wall the, last : time round. J. Sliawe, rider of t-ho - winner, was presented with a goldmounted whip, the gift of Mr. Geo. Wheeler. Tho win was a popular o;ie, and when the rider returned to weigh in ho was greeted with cheers. His exhibition of jumping was first class. Ceylon carried most mouoy in the big handicap, while Royal Anns and Byron were also well supported. At the start Gerbera aud Lady Volga were piloting the field, which was strung out, and whipped in by Master Laddo, with Ceylon, and Bronze well back. Down the back Gerbera was beaten, and Lord -Renown, with Lady Volga, took charge. Round tho bend, Otahu put in a great run, and was in front at the bottom of tho straight. Ho then had matters all his own way, and won vory easily, while Lord Renown was clear of Routine, after, which came Ceylon, Lady A r olga, and Royal Arms. Bronze ran very badly, and' seemed quite unablo to act in the heavy going. Tree Lucerne, with Deeley in tho saddle, was the popular choice in tho Electrio Handicap. At the barrier, Yankee Doodle gavo a lot of bother, aud was peut to tho outside. The favourite was then left on tho inside, aud'ho jumped out clear of Powder Fox. '1 ho latter, however, soon took chargc, aiid led with Sepoy to tho turn, where tho field ran wide, and Golden Glade, who got up on tho rails, dashed into tho lead. The Sylvia Park filly had matters all her own way in tho straight, and won easily .by a couple of lengths from Whakapona, with Sunbird next-, and-t-ho favourite in fourth position. Courtley was at the head of' tho others, the last to finish being Tho Great Mogul and Heather. A meeting of tho stewards was .held after tho race, and Deeley was fined £1 for not starting in his right place at- the barrier. Windage had a vory easy undci taking in tho Hack Steeples, which he won from end to end. Master Webb, who gave a perfect exhibition of jumping, was second, and Silver Monarch third. Makiri aud Rufus wero tho only others to finish. At the first fence Supremo stopped, and Siola ran into him. Tho winner was well handled by A. aid, and never looked like being beaten. A great surpriso resulted in tho Hack Welter Handicap, in which threo littlefancied horses filled the places. Princes Moutoa, a three-year-old filly, was made a sootl favourito, with St. Scif and Toney fancied best of tho others. The Diver made play for half a mile, ! when St. Serf joined him, but, round tho bend, Lubriline took charge, and 5 had a good ltfad as tho straight was en--5 tered. Then Styrax went on, and headed him easily. Yankeo Doodle - just beat Lubriline for second place.
