I MUNICIPAL MARKETS. I
POSITION OF PRIVATE FIKMS. A discussion touching the subject of municipal markets was Held at tho Conference of Fruitgrowers yesterday. The Canterbury Fruitgrowers' Association forwarded to tho conference a proposition reading: "That where a municipal market was established the Government should compel all auctioneers selling fish, fruit, and vegetables to sell in that market." ■Mr. J. Lor.gton (Canterbury) said that municipal authorities bad 110 power to compel auctioneers to sell iu the municipal market, and tho idea Was to got the conforonco to strengthen the hands of the municipal authorities who wished to obtain.lbis-power from the Government. Mr. A. M'Kio (Tasman): Do I understand that if tho Wellington municipality starts a market the auctioneers who have invested thousands of pounds in business must sell in the city market? Mr. Frederick Sisson (Turakina): No; Wellington would not think of establishing a markot. Mr. M'Kio: They arc talking about it. Mr. Sisson: Well, if Wellington establishes 0110 it must be needed. Mr. M'lvio:'! believe in fair play. Mr. S. Martell (Hawkc's Hay): ... You can't have progress without sacrifice. It would be unfair, according to the view of Mr. J. B. Tonar (Waitemata), to compel auctioneering firms to give up portion of their business almost at a , moment's notice. .. Mr. J. H. Archer said that tho proposal was formulated through several auctioneers in. a certain place overlooking the bids of the public in favour of the bids of others. The remit was agreed to.
