NOTES AND COMMENTS.
[Br Glencoe.] : On Monday tho Wellington Racing i Club stewards dealt with the case of i 'Allen Henderson, who was reported to Kavo given away a gate ticket for "at- " tendant on horse." The stewards do- < eided to make an example of the offen- ; dor and imposed a fino of £10. Mr. J. H. Pollock, tho Wellington Racing dub's handicapper, has received an . increase, in .salary. ,t-o .bring his remuneration up to that'paid to tho Auckland Racing Club's handicapper. The annual meeting, of members of tho Wellington' Bating Club takes place on September ,'!6. Matters have gone along exceedingly well with the Wellington Racing Club during the past season, and the bal- ' auce-shoot, which tho stewards are now 1 considering for submission to tho an-. ' :nual meeting, is tho most satisfactory j ono that any committee of tho club has ' ever had to deal with. ! Stakes are to be substantially in- 1 creased for tho coming meetings at Trentham. It will be pleasing news to ownors to learn that t-no olub has gone about tho matter in whole-hearted , style, and tho total amount to bo added during' the season amounts to £4830. J Better still (from tho point of view of ! racing), tho olub has replaced a five- ! furtong handicap by a mile weight-for-age race, and has further instituted a ' twio-milo event. The Trentham Gold Cup, as this twomile event is called, will bo run at tho autumn meeting, and will be worth 1000 sovs. No penalties or allowances, ■ or other automatic handicaps and ex- J cuses, are connected thorowith, and the now event must at once take rank f ns one of the most important annually ' to be decided in the Dominion. Coming at such a timo of tho year, too, it should attract all horsos of any note, as they will all have had thorough preparations for tho - Easter meetings. .Without doubt,' tho club has taken the right step in placing tho race upon its programme, and there 6cems to be no reason why it should not bo one of tho best-paying races of tho year. At tho spring meeting next month, the principal increase is in the Champion Plato, which has been raised from 400 sovs. to 800 sovs. At tho summer mooting, tho Wellington Cup has been raised to tho value of 1300 sovs,, and tho winner's share will now bo £1000. Tho Telegraph Handicap has been in- i creased by 350 sovs., and a now event j on tho programme is tho Waterloo Stakes, of 500 sovs., ono milo. This is a weight-for-ago race, with penalties. Tho Wellington Racing Club Handicap, at tho meoting, will bo worth 600 sovs., tho Summer Handicap 500 sovs., tho Consolation, Metropolitan, and Nursery Handicaps 400 sovs: 'each. Other events aro being increased in smallor degree. Tho Wellington Steeplechase, at tho winter meoting, will bo worth 1000 sovs. (first horso £850), tho Winter Hurdles 600 sovs., the July Steeples 500 sovs., and the Parliamentary Handicap 400 sovs., whilo tho St. Leger, at tlio autumn meeting, will in futuro carry prize-money to tho extent of 550 sovi. All tho hack races throughout tho year will bo worth 140 sovs., tho winner taking £95 second £30, and third £15. Tho Marton meeting takes placo today. Up till Monday last practically no rain had fallen on the courso and the tracks wore in perfect order. Several downpours have, however, taken placo since then, and tho chances aro that tho going will be on the heavy side to-day. Good fields aro tho order in all the events, and the handicapper (Mr. G. Morse) has evidently pleased the. majority of owners. Proceedings will commence with tho Hack Hurdles, for which a useful field is- engaged. Rill (lOst. Gib.) should carry most money, but the Hawora horso. Ka'tua (9st. 81b.) has been pleasing greatly in his work, and so, also, has Aha in tho Lloyds' stables at Marton. A lot of boom surrounds Bonny Helen (Boniform —Helen Portland), an inmate of P. Tilloy's 'Fordell stable, and the 3-year-old, who has classical engage- i ments, is sure to see a short price in I the Maiden Plate. Outside Mr. A. ' Alexander's filly, the field is a weak : ono. _■ Kaniki (Bst. 71b.), Altcar (Bst. 71b.), nnd Expect (Bst. 61b.) aro the primo fancies m the Railway Handicap. Tho first-named showed good form at Trentham, and is regarded by his supporters as a first-clas6 horse, but. Altcar can go very fast, and tho pair should put up an interesting race. The Hunt Cup starters are required to bo ridden by amateur horsemen, and,}
tins will causo hackers to fight shy, but Gondolier and Rufus —both good jumpors —will doubtless have plenty of supporters. If tho going is very heavy Bronze may forfeit hor engagement in tho big handicap and Royal Arms is another doubtful starter. This may pave tho way for Byron (Donley), and Ceylon (M'Donald). W. Bell will rido Bronzo if sho starts, and tho combination is suro 'to bo tho best supported. A big field is engaged in tho Electric Hack Handicap. Several smart sprintera aro oil tho card, and if Lord Lupin, Trco Lucorno, or Ainsdalo draw anything liko a good position, a good deal of support will bo forthcoming for them. Windago has only to go to tho post 'to see a very short price in the Hack Steeples and with the country not so difficult as at Riccarton, ho will doubtless get round without mishap. Tonoy ran a smart mile at Wangaiiui last week, and ho and St. Serf aro likely to be tho best fancied in tho Hack Welter event.
