During tlhe hearing of a claim at tho Arbitration Court this morning for compensation by a seaman who alleged total incapacity, to work as the direct result of having been struck on the shoulders and neck oy an empty coal, basket, there was the .usual conflict of medical testimony. One medical man told the Bench! Hhat the man was not quite so bad as ho made out. The imponding claim for compensation had no doubt retarded his progress (he commented dryly), but he would not be able to 'do heavy work for many years;" On'tho other hand, there was no- medical assurance that applicant was deliberately malingering. Counsel for the defendant took occasion to remark that in Germany and other countries the advent of legislation for workers' compensation had been marked by a conspicuous increase in tho complaint of neurasthenia. He asked the Bench not to nurso this form of sickness jimong the workers of New Zealand..
