The death .is reported from Auckland of Captain Alexander Eagleton, an old shipmaster, wiio was engaged in the coastal trade of New Zealand ill tho 'fifties. Ho retired from the sea about a quarter of a century ago, and was later appointed caretaker of tho Calliope Dock. Tho deceased, who was 86 years of ago, leaves a widow, four daughters, and three sons.

M'Miim has had extensive experience in nowspaper work and management,- and in journalism generally. Dr. Ardagh has tendered his resignation as a member of the medical residential staff of tho Auckland Hospital (says our local correspondent), as ho intends to take up private practice. Mr. W, F. Worloy, who lias been t teacher in tho service of . the Nelson Education Board for the past thirty-fiv6 years, retired last Friday on superannuation. Arriving in Nelson from England in 1875, _ Mr. Worloy joined tha education service in 1878, and has been teaching over since. He was the "recipient of a presentation before retiring.

Mr. and Mrs. W. Bethwaito, of Nelson. celebrated their golden wedding on Friday last, and were the recipients of congartulations from relatives and numerous friends. In tho past Sir. Bethwaito, wTio is a J .P., has ser.ved on various local bodies, including tlio City Council, and still rotains his seat oil the board of directors of the Permanent Building Society, a position he has occupied for over thirty years. Oil Friday afternoon the directors of the Building Society met in the board room, and Mr. 11. Baigent made a valuable presentation to Mr. Bethwaite, as a souvenir and an expression of esteem and goodwill.

Mr. A. D. Stubbs, of Hastings, who lias been chief engineer at tho Frimley Canning Works during the i>ast six years, has been appointed engineer and superintendent of works at thoManga--0110 Oilfields, and leaves Hastings today to tako up his new position.

The Rev. M. Bawden Harris, of Paliiatua,' who has been seriously ill during tho past week, is now reported to bo showing an improvement. Mr. Harold Smith, surveyor, of the firm of Messrs. Middleton and Smith, will leave shortly for tlie Chatham Islands,, and will cany out some extensive surveys there.

Before tho Licensing Committee at Nelson adjourned on Monday, Mr. Best remarked on the fact that tlio clerk, 'Mr. K- C. Rolling, was about to retire ou superannuation. He referred in appreciative terms to tho way in winch tho clerk had carried out his duties, and he moved that a. minute be rccordfid expressing appreciation of Mr. Kclliiic'R sen-ices. Other speakers also referred 1 to good work done by Mr. Rolling. Mr. David Crewe (Mayor of Pahiatuft) is still confined to his bed, but his condition is said to bo showing signs of improvement.
