NURSES' HOURS.
» IN AUCKLAND HOSPITAL. • (Br Tclwrraph— Special Uomsconaent.) Auckland, September 1. A letter signed by thiity-six nurses came before tho committee of the Auckland Hospital and Charitable Aid Board this morning. The writers pointed out thoy worked seven days a week, aiid had a fortnight's leavo each year. They asked for three weeks in future. Dr. Maguire, explained that the sisters got three weeks' leave, and the nurses two weeks' leave. He pointed out that nurses had eight hours on. duty, and sixteen off. If the request was granted it would rr\ean the employment of three extra nurses. . _ Dr. Keller said another week's holiday might increase tho vitality of the nurses. . Dr. Maguire said that he was not opposed to the extra week, but suggested that tlio sisters, who worked longer hours, should bo given a month's holiday each year, and tho nurses (after three years' service) three weeks, and ordinary, nurses two weeks. , Tho chairman said that it meant increasing tho cost between £200 and £300. Mr. M.i J. Coyle moved that a small committee bo set up, with D.\ Maguire, to no into tho matter. Tin's was agreed to. t
