THE SMALLPOX EPIDEMIC.
TEN FRESH CASES IN SYDNEY. By Telezraph—Prc3s Acsociation—CoDyrirht (Rcc. September 2, 0.45 a.m.) Sydney, September 1. Ten cases of smallpox were reported in Sydney to-day. Sixty-three patients and 210 convalescents are now in quarantine. A largo number of persons who presented themselves for examination wero found to be suffering from chicken-pox. Empty chairs wero numerous at tho meeting of tho Greater Wellington Municipal Electors' Association last night. In fact, tho inclement weather had tho effect of reducing tho total muster to somo fifteen persons, including tho chairman, four speakers, aud three reporters. Tho mooting was in consequence postponed until next Monday, when tho question of whether it. is desirable that, tlio Mayor should be oleeted by and from the councillors will bo discussed. The speakers on this question will bo Councillors Hislop and Buddie. ' Other subjects for addresses will be, "Utility of Motor Buses," speaker Dr. A.. K. Newman, M.P.; "Rating of Sports Grounds," speaker Mr. W. Perry.
A firo at the Skating Rink, in Vivian Stroet last night required tho attention of tho Municipal Fire Brigade. Tho call was received at 10.53 p.m. Within a fow minutes tho brigafie arrived on tho scene, and discovorod that tho outbreak was in tho skates room. It was suppressed after slight damage had bcon dono to tho stock. Tho rink is occupied Cy Mr. J, Matson, and is insured in the Yorkshire office.
