TRAVELLING ALLOWANCES.
Sir,—Now that tlio Estimates are at last beforo the Houso it would bo well perhaps beforo increases to Judges of tho Native Land Court and other highlypaid officials, if .tho members, beforo signifying their assent thereto, were in each case whero such increases wero proposed, to call for a return showing tho rato of travelling allowances received by such. It would I think bo found that tho biggor tho pay tho bigger tho travelling allowance. Some are nearly always drawing a fat allowance. Thero should bo somo limitation to wliat i 3 at present in many cases moro than what a junior has to livo upon. There should be a thorough investigation into travelling allowances connected with all Departments of tlio Civil Service. Tho country has been bled too much in the past in this direction, and the timo is opportune now to remedy this.—-I am, Ct °'' PATRIOT. Wellington, August 23, 1913.
