THE N.Z.C.
Sir,—ln course of conversation with sorao old veterans, 0110 of whom was a member of the Scouts, 1 happened to refer to a letter I had read in .your issue of Aucust 15 headed "A l'aeo of
Early Now Zealand History," and signed "I. Jlaling, N.Z.C." It was at onco questioned' whether JlO had the right to claim this distinction. I could only produco a copy of your paper and further 6tato that I had tho pleasure of Mr. Maling's acquaintance some thirty years ago, when ho was in chargo of tlho telegraph construction in Taranaki. and at that time I understood ho was tho holder of tho Now Zealand Cross, but my friouds . producod- "Whittaker's Almanack" for 1912, and upon referring to it 1 found to my dismay I. Maling's name is not included in the list of recipients of that great distinction. To my mind is is unthinkable that any man coull write such' a lotter as appears alw>vo his' namo if ho did not hold tho N.Z.C., and as an old friend of his, I should lilto to inquire from you or the colonial compiler of "Whittaker's" the reason I. Maling's namo is omitted.—l am, etc., HAWERA. [Tho namo evidently has been omitted from tho list in error.]
