THE CONSCIENCE CLAUSE.
Sir, —Without wishing to entor into tho general discussion of the Bible-in-schools, I woukl like to ask'tho Rev. Or. Clcary one question. The Bishop, judging by liis public utterances, thinks that the proposed conscience clauso of the Biblo-dn-sohcols party ds likely to becomo a sort of proselytising machine. Now, supposing such to bc,tlio case, I wisl) to ask tho Bishop if ho does not think it possible for him, with other dignitaries of other churches, if he likes, to draft a conscience clause 'by wfliioli the present secular system of teaching can be mantained l , witli tho addition of Bible-reading, so as to satisfy tho wishes of those who demand it? Surely this is not boyond tho wit of Dr. Clcary and his follow clerics, or tho politicians who have tho making of our laws. In a word, I want to know if the reverend gentleman honestly considers soldi a task impossible. Awaiting his reply,—l am, etc., INQUIRER.. August 23, 1913.
