ON THE HOCKEY FIELD.
SHIELD GAME.
THE VISITORS VANQUISHED.
Although Otago were defeated by a good margin 011 Saturday, -they were in nowiso outclassed. Always they were dangerous, and had it not been for the fino efforts of Dwyer, Wellington's goalkeeper, their chances of. winning would have been quite good. Their forwards played a rattling gamo, Andraea especially being at times brilliant. Rhyburn and F. Drake, although they did not exhibit tho finesse of Andraea, both played very solid games. Dwyer it. was who was tho hero of tho game. The hottest of hot shots failed to beat liim, and considering tho peppering ho received, it was remarkablo that only two shots got past him.. Ho was not in his goal when, the other goal was scored, Robbie and G. Strack were quite tho best of tho local forwards, and tho best back was probably M'Gregor. It was a very fast gamo, and all tho whiio interesting. Tho Came. A minute after the bully-off the fight was in full swing, and hardly anowier minute had gone DeJ'oro the ball, 'which in the time had travelled over a surprisingly large area of ground, was soaring into the net in Otago's rear, from tho stick of U. Strack. Wellington, 1; Otago, 0. After a few warm exchanges, tho Utago men worked into Wellington's ground, and a good centre by Fitt seomed to herald a cortain score. Dwyer, however, stepped out from his net, and in characteristic stylo kicked it clear. From there the Wellington forwards galloped off up tho field with tho ball, and a tight struggle ensued on tho edge of tho circle. Boyd tapped it out to a clear space in front of tho goal, hopped after it, and netted it. Wellington, 2; Otago, 0. With two up against them m tho first four minutes, tlio Otago men becamo more zealous. They \ romped about tho circle, and twico they shot very straight and hard, but each time Dwyer got there in time; but Otago kept at it, and the pace became very fast. The visitors wero sorely harrying tile local backs, who, although they could not keep the Otago men out,"at least succeeded in keeping 'away goals. From a corner hit, liowover, • came Otago's reward. F. Drako, from a good position, sent in a fine goal Wellington, 2; Otago, 1. The Otago men returned again 'to fhe goaliDg area, but a good effort by M'Gregor brought Wellington forne relief. Tho solid hitting of tho Southerners, however, soon changed t'ho order, and Otago surged onco moro into Wellington's basa. Thompson secured from a scramblo, and Sent on to Andraea, • who, from a good scoring position, shot it truly—but for tho foot of Dwyer, who promptly kicked it behind. Wellington benefited from the resultant "corner" and M'Eldowney sent his forwards away to tho front. Andraea tried'valiantly to check them, but without result. Con Strack shot from a difficult angle, but tho ball bounced off the goal-keeper's pad. Robbio was handy, however, and 110 scored without difficulty. Wellington, 5; Otago, 1. So ended tho spell. Second Spell. Not a bit slower was tho pace in tho second half. Wellington attacked at once, and what should havo been a cortain goal was lost through C. Strack sending tlio ball over tho net. An Otago attack was sent to tlio rightabout by a' 'hefty hit by M'Gregor, and for a brief while hostilities wore confined to mid-field. Then tho Wellington front division set out again, Griffiths taking tlio ball well down tho lino and centring to G. Strack, who goaled. Wellington, 4; Otago, 1. A mmuto later saw, Wellington again flitting about tho enemy's goal-mouth, and from a wild set-to a yard or two from tho goal the ball was again netted by G. Strack. Wellington, 5: Otago, 1. ' The locals persisted in their aggressiveness, and soon Boyd found the goal, only to be called back for, an infringement. With some good stick-work Otago worked their way into Wellington territory, and for a time there they stayed. Rhyburn sent in a hot ono, but Dwyer was quite equal to it. A moment later, however, Rhyburn repeated tho dose, and this time Dwyer was quite beaten. Wellington, 5; Otago, ,2. Otago continued attacking, but wero at length repulsed. Haigli sont tho ball up to Robbie, who galloped along with it right into tho circlo and shot a fine goal. Wellington, 6; Otago, 2. Anothor invasion by Wellington was sent out by H. Drake, and tho Otago people set out for aiiother goal. Tilings becamo very brisk around about Wellington's g9al, and for' a moment Dwyer. was brought out of his goal. Ho was busily engaged with an opposing forward when tho ball glanced from ono of their sticks to within a few inches of goal-mouth, and an Otago man —¥. Drako—reached it first. Wellington 6, Otago 3. Tho poco did not slaken a bit, and both teams were playing quite beyond themselves. Desperate defence and wild attack were in turn tlio order, and neither team dare let up a second. The locals descended upon tho enemy's ground, and the ball flew about tho 'circle very rapidly. : Tho southerners' defence stood it a while, until an opportunity presented itself to G. Strack. It was his fourth, Wellington's seventh, and the laßt goal of the match. Perceptibly then, tho paco became slower, and soon the gamo was ended, l&aving Wellington victors by 7 goals to 3. Messrs. Manning and Organ controlled tho game. ' " JUNIOR REPRESENTATIVES. In tho Canterbury-Wellington representative game Canterbury won by 7 goals to Wellington's 2. Thore was iiftle combination in the visiting team, and in tho homo team there was less — much less. For tho winners, Drayton (2), Ayers (2), Faulkner, Wilson, and Townes scored goals, and Collins and Emery shot Wellington's goals. THIRD-CLASS FINAL.
