[By Glencoe.] Ceylon ami Naumai are tlio only North Island horses engaged at tho Ashburton meeting on September 12. Tlio New Zealaiul-bred gelding Master Paul started favourite in the hurdle race at Williamstown 011 August 23, but finished out of a place. The Marion Jockey Club's Spring meeting will bo held 011 Wednesday. Acceptances for tlio Dannevirke meeting closo to-morrow evening. Arrangements are being made for shipping The Nativo to Sydney by this week's boat, and tlio little black fellow is to bo nominated in the jumping events at the Spring meeting • next month. On arrival in Sydney tlio gelding named will go into F. M'Grath's stables at Kensington. It is reported locally .that Zimmerman has been purchased by a local breeder, and probably tlio son of Ormo will be standing tJio season in these parts next month. A London correspondent, writing under dato July 23, says: The Ruapehu, which loaves hero on July 30, will take, to New Zealand several valuable animals purchased in tills country by the well-known Hawko's Bay breeder, Mr. G. P. Donnelly. Tho most important of these is tlio thoroughbred* stallion Demosthenes, for whom Mr. Bonnelly has paid 1200 guineas. Demosthenes is by Desmond, the siro of tho first two horses in this year's Derby, out of Carlin, who herself was .1 good winner, and is dani of Carrousel, winner of the. Goodwood Cup. Carlin is out of Lauretta, who is also dam of' Doris, tho dam of Sunstar, the Derby winner. On the turf Demosthenes himself was a highclass . performer and a proved stayer. Ho won tho Doneaster Handicap, tho Stewards' Handicap at Epsom, the Old Newton Cup, etc.; and he was second in tho City and Suburban and third in the Royal Hunt Cup at Ascot. Relievo, winner of the last Newmarket Handicap, scored in the Flying | Handicap at Rosohill on August 23 with 9st. in tlio saddle. His success lias sent him to the position of favourite for the Epsom Handicap, 111 which his weight is Bst. 21b. It does not look as if Sir George Clifford or Mr. J. 15. Reid will bo represented in the Waiiganui Guineas this year, for neither of the sportsmen named has engaged a handicap liorEe ai the meeting. What promised to bo strong opposition for Merry Roo in the Avondale Guineas in the shape of the Stepniak filly Tho Hague has teen removed by tho announcement that Mr. T. H. Lowry has decided not to send her to Auckland. The task of racing Merry Eoe will now bo left to Soultikoff, Marshal M'Donald, and Monojack. ThoHighden filly Adelieia is engaged, but 'she will probably bo reserved for the Wanganui Guineas. Thd. twenty-seventh annual meeting of tlio Napier Jockey Club was held on Fridaj l , Jl'r. John M'Vay presiding. Tho annual report showed a profit tor tho year amounting t-o £1034 Is. 3d., notwithstanding that an . equal sum had been expended in alterations and improvements, and increasing the stakes. In speaking to tho report the chairman referred to the benelits accruing from the appointment of stipendiary stewards. \A suggestion to issue two tickets for fcvery pound put 011 tho tetalisator !iyas referred to the com.mittce.
