RETAIL OF OPIUM. IGNORANCE OF THE STATUTE. In tho Magistrate's Court yesterday, Thomas Gordon pleaded guilty to throe charges of failuro to keep a retailer's opium book in accordance with Section 4 of tho Opium Act, 1908; He was fined £1, with costs £l.ls. For having sold opium in greater quantity than the Act authorised, Gordon was ordered to pay costs 7s. Defendant pleaded ignorance of tho Act. BY-LAWS BROKEN. . For failuro to comply with a drain-, ago notice, Norman Leslie Gurr was fiiied £1, with costs 7s. For having fixed a sink- without first obtaining a permit to do so, T. Sutherland, a plumhcrj was fined 10s., with' costs 7s. / As the persons responsible for stock found wandering at large, Cecil Graham was fined 10s., with costs 135.; William Telford 55., and 135.; and John Telford 55., and 13s. John Neil was orderod to pay costs 7s. forliaving ridden a bicycle without a light at. night. MISCELLANEOUS CASES. . Through being deemed idlo and disorderly persons, in that they habitually consorted with reputed prostitutes, Caroline Gardiner, Agnes Wylic, Eva Palmer, and Lena Petersen were ordered to (ho Salvation Army Homo for six months. For having importuned in Taranaki Street, Ruby ICirlc, Kate Brady, Mary Johnston, and Margaret Irving wcro sentenced to ono month's imprisonment. Lena Petersen was fined £1 for' insobriety. A firio of £2 was entered, against Charles Cook, who was. convicted of disorderly behaviour in Willis Street. Mary Louisa pleaded guilty to the theft of an overcoat belonging to Nellio Leo. Tho. defendant, was sentenced to ono month's imprisonment, CIVIL ACTION. CLAIM ON UNION COMPANY, ■ ; Beforo Dr. M'Arthur, S.M., Alcock and Co., Ltd., billiard table manufacturers, sued tno Union Steam Ship Co. of New Zealand, Ltd., for £30 as tho amount of damago done in transit to three billiard-table slates. Mr. J. C. Peacock appeared for tho plaintiffs, and Mr. P. Levi for the defendants. The magistrate reserved decision.
