NOTES AND COMMENTS.

[By Glencoe.] The Marton Jockey Club's spring meeting will bo hold on Wednesday. Good acceptances have been- received, and, if tho woathor is good, a capital day's sport should bo witnessed. The winning ridor in the Hunt Club Cup will bo presented with, a goldmounted whip, tho' gift of Mr. G. A. Wheeler, a popular sportsman in the Rangitikei district. . Nino horses have been left behind at H. Hickey's establishment in Hastings, and, during the latter's . absence in Randwick, the team will be superintended by D. Jarvis. Hickey may return in a couplo of months time, and, if Tho Rover is well enough, ho will take him to Sydney. Tho local owner of Peroneal, Mr. W. Nidd, intended racing the mare at Marton, but, when he found her at the top of tho handicap, ho decided that it would be just as well if she stayed at homo. Sho will probably race on one of tho days of tho Otaki meeting, and will then bo railed to Wanganui. Her full-sister, Peronilla, has wintered very well, and may race at Trcntham in October. ■ Prior to leaving for Sydney, H. Hickey endeavoured to secure Dorando, Windage, and Loch Maben on behalf of one of his clients, but-no business resulted. Dorando will probably bo nominated at Avondalo next month. Tho ex-Aucklander, J. N. M'Gregor received an ovation when he rode Vanguard to victory,, and beat Leah Kleshna in tho August Steeplechase at Flemington. An Australian writer says that if he bad always been as well handled Vanguard would havo scored ' more frequently. As A. Oliver will bo unablo to do tho weights onSoltano in his first two public outings in' Sydney, F. Davis has decided to enlist tho services of C. Emerson. j ' At tho last moment L. Traill found himself unablo to accompany H. Hiekey's team to Randwick, and H. Thomp-son,-of Riccarton, filled his place. Tno latter will rido Beacon in his engagements, while F. Flynn will bo on Whakaweira. Sir Daniel, tho other member of' the team, will be ridden by A. Oliver. Masterpiece is sure to command attention from punters in connection with tho Cup, but a stable companion in Quarantine has been befriended during tho past few days. Quarantine is a black four-year-old colt, got by Treadmill from Fairhaven, by Pilgrim's Progress from Elusive, by Trenton. Elusivo is tho dam of To-morrow, Lady Wayward, Flitaway,- and Thistledown. •Ho did not appear as a two-year-old, and started twice as a three-year-old, when ho won tho Spring Plato from Potoa and others at the last Cup meeting, and afterwards finished out of a place in the Fendalton. A threo-year-old brother in Stevedore is also engaged in tho race. "Sentinel," in the "Otago Witness," remarks "li dark room 1 ' for photographers is included amongst the improvements being carried out at Randwick. In Now Zealand the "dark Toom" is generally used for tho purpose of holding stewards' inquiries. Martyre, by Martian —Nantes, has not been a success since sho went to Australia. It is. evident, however, that hopes are still'entertained concerning her, as D- J- Price has her in work again at Caulfield. His Majesty the King has 21 horses in training, and 15 yearlings were on tho point of being placed in commission when tho last mail to hand left England. Tho Wanganui Jockey Club will distribute 0425 sovereigns in stakes this season. Although Bon Revo is at a very short price for tho Now Zealand Cup, there are indications that Bon Ton may bo the stable-elect on the day. It is significant that the latter is nominated at Wanganui, though his stable companion is x not. Acceptances for the Danuevirke meeting closo on Tuesday at 9 p.m. Entries for tho Trial Plate are due at the samo time. The high-priced Soult colt Marconi has left J. O'Neill's stables at New Plymouth, and is now under C. Coloman's care at Ellerslie.
