The 60,000-ton Hamburg-Amerika stoamor Impeijator, with a thousand steerage passengers 011 board, was the scene of a terrific firo near' the Hoboken Docks. The sccond officer and seamen were cut off when fighting the flames, and perished. The Hoboken firo department poured tons of water into the holds, gradually overcoming tie flames, but tho vessel had dangorously listed before tho outbreak was- subdued, Tho passengers, awakened by the smoke, became terror-stricken and dashed ashore. Tho officers, however, managed to keop some kind of order, and no one was hurt. Tho vessel's interior was greatly damaged. . The fire originated in the steerage. [The lin.perator is the 50,0000-ton steamer belonging to the Hamburg-Amerika Company.' She was only completed this year.] DAMAGE NOT GREAT. (Rec. August 29, 9.30 p.m.) London, August 29. The damage to the Imperator is less than was anticipated. Tho. vessel's regular sailings will not bo interrupted.
