At tho Supreme Court to-day, Alexander Gore Brett, late clerk of tho Eden Terraco'ltoad Board, was iound guilty of having defrauded tho board between September and July last of £237. For tho defenco it was urged that family troubles and a painful disease' of tho car had upset aoeused s mental balance. Counsel said that carelessness, and not criminal intent was the cause of tho trouble. Accused declared that systematic thefts had taken placo from the till, and he was afraid to report them, muddling tho books to conceal the looses. . Tho jury recommended lenient treatment, and accused was ordered to como up for sentence when called upon, provided ho made restitution. BLACKBALL STRIKE. MEN INVOKE THE FEDERATION/ Greymouth, August 27. A mass meeting of miners at Blackball this morning decided to place the disputo imrcscrvedly iii the liands of tho Federation, whoso representatives arc exped/d to arrive shortly and take t'lio matter up on behalf of tlio men. Tho Premier sent a tolegram to tho union regretting to hoar of the strike, and adoring to send Commissioner lially if both sides aro agreeable. Tho union secretary was instructed to telegraph to, Mr. Massey, stating that the disputo is now out of the local union'? bauds. ' BUSINESS AND CH,ANCE. SHOPKEEPER HEAVILY FINED, Auckland, August 28. Thomas Sutor, the proprietor of'a business which combinyn '■ a scliemo whereby prizes were won chance, was fined £2o at tho Polico "wirt to-day. It was explained by. tho'police that tlio business was really a fancy goods shop in which attendants sold penny cako chocolates for a shilling, the purchaser being entitled- to draw ior a prize. Tho case against James Henry Beaiv, charged with -perjury, was continued in tho, Supremo Court to-day. Tlio jury, after a-retirement of a littlo oier two hours, returned a verdict of "Not guilty." Auckland divorce case. Auckland, August 23. Tho hearing of tho suit for'divorce brought by William Henry Paterson against liis wife, Mabel Kathleen Paterson and Gustav Kronfeld, was ' continued at the Supremo Court to-day. Extensive evidence was given on behalf of Mrs. Paterson, and further hearing adjourned till to-day. ALARMINC HEALTH REPORTS. •' Christchuroh, August 27.' Tlio danger of tho spread of tuberculosis from infected milk was again discussed by tho Hospital Board to-day. Some months ago tho board liad rather alarming before it on the subject, and something in tho nature of a scare was' created in conscqueiice. Tho Health Department, however, alla.tcd public . alarm, and .the agitation died out. To-day-tho dyurman of the board reverted to the suoject, and members were virtually unanimous in demanding that tho Government givo the question urgent -attention. • Resolutions to'that effect wero carried. IDA BRADLEY'S DEATH. Christchurch, August 27. A new jury was empanelled this morning, and' the charge of manslaughter preferred against Phillip Jiffies Kelly was hoard again.' Kelly was' charged with having, on July 24, caused tho death of Ida Una Heath Bradley by negligently driving a takicab. Tlio evidence was along tho lines of that given at tho previous trial, and, after 3J hours' retirement, tho jury returned a i verdict cf not guilty, THE SHAW CHARGES. [ Timaru, August 27. Tho Walter Shaw cases were resum« ed. Shaw was committed for trial for jhiaudulently trailing to account for £2022 of the M'Kcchnjo trust moneys. ' The"'Otago Daily Times" was fined 40s. and costs at tho Polico Court this 1 morning for a breach of tho Gaming ' Act in publishing, a Lipton tea advertisement offering cash prizes to buyers of tho tea. </ ' ALOOF.
