NOTES AND COMMENTS.
[Br Glexcoe.] The committee of the Wellington Placing Club meets on Monday afternoon to pass the programme for tho spring meeting in October. A well-known Awapuni trainer who was present at the Wanganui Hunt Club meeting states the jumping was perfect, and some promising horses were seen under silk. He particularises Ingeirkender, by St. Paul, as one likely to see a better day. A. Neale's lease of Manakau has expired, and the gelding is once more in T. Wilson's stables at Awapuni. He will accompany Powder Fox and Lady Georgia to the Marton meeting next week. ' Mummer is being given a month's spell at Hastings, and will not bo asked to race again until tho Hat season is well advanced. The Gazeley gelding has been a very consistent performer during the winter. The hurdle horse Woolloomooloo, who went wrong just prior to the National Hurdles, for which lie was well fancied by his owner, is once more in work at Hastings and appears to be quite sound. He may be expected to race in the hurdle events at the Hastings and Napier meetings in October. T. Pritchard is again riding work at Trentham, but finds the exercise severo after his long retirement. Ho is only able to ride a couple of horses each morning. The big .black gelding Ebonite (Kilcheran—Sequin) was operated on yesterday for respiratory troubles. Another inmate of Kingaji's stables, Big Blast, was fired. The heavy rain which has prevailed during the last fow days has left tho Trentham tracks in a sodden state. Not much work was done yesterday, but Ceylon, who has an engagement at Marten, was slackened out over seven furlongs, and with a stable companion to aid her, she got over the distanco well. M. M'Donald will ride the chestnut mare at Marton. Yesterday afternoon at Trentham'Grit Lawless and Silver King were schooled over tho steeplechase fences. It was the first jump which the former had had since he won and paid tlio sensational dividend at tho Wellington meeting last month. Kilrain had been given a few days' spell after liis. exertions at Riccarton, but the bay gelding was again on tho tracks yesterday morning and did light work. , Newcomers in C. Pritchard's stahles at Trentham are a 3-year-old bay geld- 1 ing by Ghoorka who will carry the same colours as lCnutsford, a 3-year-old bay gelding by Achilles from Punawai, owned by Mr. Hira Parata, and a .3-year-old by Conqueror from an Officer mare; No names have yet been chosen for these horses, but the last-named will probably race as Piccadilly. Jockey A. Julian who has been spending a holiday in Dunedin came up from tho south yesterday and goes on to Napier to-day. He is returning for tho Marton meeting to ride Witched, a Karamu representative, in the Hack Hurdles. , Elaborate preparations are being made for the accommodation of Soltano on board the Maunganui,'which leaves for, Sydney t-o-day.'' A -special box is being built and the Soult colt will occupy tho space usually allotted to three horses. This will- give him plenty of .room to move about, and lie down on the journey. Advices from Napier state that, in consequence of the wet weather which has been experienced lately, Soltano is not as forward as his admirers could wish, and his. trainer will require to keep him busy at Randwick to get him ready for tho trying ordeal on October 4. Included in tho nominations for the Dannevirke Steeplechase one notices tho name of Simple Simon. Surely this is not tho old Gerard gelding that used to. race in Sydney and who was recently brought to this country to be pensioned off! During the week La Reina has como in for solid support for the Now Zealand Cup. Tho Auckland mare showed last summer that two miles was not beyond her, for Bobrikoff only defeated her by a-neck in the Auckland.Cup, and tho pair were many lengths in front of tlio rest, of the field. H. Hickey arrived from Hastings last evening, and is leaving for Sydney by the Maunganui to-day. Ho is taking Beacfon,' Whakaweira, and Sir Daniel with him. Hickey has been dogged by misfortune ever sinco he decided upon tho journey, and on top of tho breakdown of Chief Marshall and The Rover, comes the nows that Beacon had got east in his box. Ho is, however not hurt much, and should be quite right again by the time that he has to race. Word from Marton states that T: Lloyd will leave for Sydney next week with tho jumpers Glenmore -and Marton, who are to race at the A.J.C. spring meeting. F. Davis intends to' run Soltano a couple of times before the A.J.C. Derby. The bay colt will probably start at Kosehill and also 'at Tatjtersalt'a in mile races. Tho junipers Coronetted and, Waitoto, who wero sold at the conclusion of tho National meeting, have been nominated in the hurdle races at Ashburton next month. Tlie stallion' Malatua, by Malua— Faithful, died in New South Wales this month. - He was purchased as a yearling by Mr. D. O'Brien, for whom ho showed good form in New Zealand. At the spring meeting of tho Canterbury Jockey Club in 1899, he finished second to Seahorse in tho New Zealand Cup, and second to Explosion in the Metropolitan Handicap, finishing up by winning the Jockey Club Handicap. Later in the same season ho won the Great Easter Handicap carrying Bst-. 131b. and | the following day, under 9st. 61b., he | finished second to Dundas in the Great Autumn Handicap. On his retirement to the stud he did not leave many winners, though one of his progeny, Maranui, won the Caulfield Cup for Mr. D. O'Brien in 1908.
