RUGBY MYSTERY. H. ATKINSON & ALL-BLACK TRIP. WHO WROTE THE LETTER? A Rugby mystery surrounds ono phasa of the collection ■ of a team to tour California. I . In the original selection was one H. Atkinson, a West Coast forward. On Friday last tho New Zealand Union re--1 ceived a letter dated August 19, and ■ signed "FI. Atkinson" stating that At- ' kinson would bo unablo to mako tlie trip to California. In yesterday morning's issue there appeared a telegram from the West Coast stating that Atkinson denied that ho was unablo to go wit'h the team. Inquiries wero made by a Dominion reporter yesterday, and ho was*told that "apparently thero has been somo funny business." Tho union acted on the letter signed "11. Atkinson," as it seemed to bo genuine, and C. Gillespie, lock of tho Oriental Club, Wellington, was chosen to fill his place. 'J.' 10 secretary of t'he New Zealand Union (Mr. J. D. Avery) telegraphed to ; Atkinson yesterday, and during the afternoon he received a i*eply from Atkinson emphatically denying authorship of the letter. Atkinson lives'in Greymouth, and tho letter was sent from Hokitika. , The union will inquiro into tlie matter. Nothing official could bo ascertained as to the courso to bo pursued, but tho procedure will most likely be decided at a meeting of the union tonight. However, it is not improbable that the letter will bo sent to the West Coast Union for investigation to be made ton tho spot. In tho meantime Gillespie's position Is a strange one. He had applied for leave in order that he could go with the team. Ho has, ,of course, been officially notified' of tho position.
