HOCKEY MATCH.

CANTERBURY & WELUNCTON. SOUTHERN MEN BEATEN. Karori Pari; was eoddon and in many places sloppy yesterday afternoon, ivlieii the local liockoy representatives played Canterbury. Weakened as tliey were without the services' of tho Strack Bros., Griffiths, and Boyd—four brilliant scoring men—Wellington wore quite equal to tho task of beating tho visitors, which they did by 2 goals to one. Tho substitutes in tho team —Cleghorn, Shearan, Henderson, and Murphy— were all responsible for good work, as was Haigh, who replaced Thompson in the backs. The Canterbury forwards aro a much bettor sett than has berai seen in tho teams that havo so far visited Wellington this season, Holland on tho loft wing being responsible for one or two very fine efforts. The visiting backs were in a lot of trouble during tho afternoon, but they defended fairly creditably; Details are as follow:—

The First Spell. Both sides wcro sloiv from tlic bullyoff, and somo minutes had elapsed before either side attacked. Wellington were into their opponents' circle, soon, however, but tho sloppy ground beat them, and they were forced to retreat. Canterbury sot off on a warm attack, but an infringement halted thorn, Wellington's forwards manoeuvred t3io ball back to their enemy's base, and a chanco was given to Glcgliom, who, however, missed it. The home men stayed in tho circle, and were within an ace of scoring on several occasions. For a moment tho ball was sent to Wellington's end', but Haigh secured, and brought it back. Ho centred .well, but the Canterbury men defended hard' and saved. Again Haigh brought tho ball to h!is forward, and from a fine centre Clcghorn shot Wellington's first goal. _ From the "bully," tho visitors went into Wellington's circle, but Campbell sent them away with a good hit; and Wellington wero once more attacking. Shearan had an opportunity of scoring, bait liis stick landed not on tho ball, but ini the mud, and the chance was gone. The Wellington men romped over tho circle some more, but, Canterbury were able to clear, and Quinton set off for the circle. He boat M'Eldowney badly, and carried tho ball well into _ Wellington's end. Holland, on the wing, centred very cleverly, but tho Red forwards could not score, and, play once more went to Canterbury's end. The home forwards hammered away in the circle', but what shots did go true wore successfully fended off l»y tho visiting goal-keeper. Tho Canterbury men made another descent on the enemy's quarter, where Hulbert- was conspicuous for good play. The ball flew about the goal-mouth for a little, until Thixjp, from a fine position, shot, but not accurately, and Wellington cleared. Clegfhom in a good lonehand effort brought play back to Canterbury's end, where -lie sent it on to MurphV. Murphv looked a likely scorer, but a Canterbury back interrupted, and tho ball rolled over fJlio lino. From tho resultant' "corner," tho_ Canterbury men shifted operations into mid-field, and half-time.-sounded'. Wellington, 1; Canterbury, nil.

The Second Half. Canterbury attacked on resuming, and tho local backs wore very busy.. A southern forward sent the ball luiigii over tho top of tlio goal, and a minute later anotlier shot missed. A corner-hit found tho Wellington defence very slow, and' from a fierce scramble Hu'lbert -smote the ball i.uto the net. ■ Wellington, 1; Canterbury, 1. Camtcrbury came at attack .apain immediately, but* a fine piece of play by Kobbio got Wellington out of difficulty. The pace now was hotter than at any time during tho game, .and the "Wellington forwards struggled hard to score. Twnco shots missed, and then .tfliey wore forced back. Dwyer (Wellington goal-keeper) was calM upon to save, which lie did, but feebly, and had it not been for the quick return of M'Eldowney. Canterbury must have goaled. Ihc locals fought their way into tho circle, and business was very brisk. Brown (m-goal for Canterbury) saved well twice m quick succession , but a- third shot arriving just as suddenly from the stick or Slieait-an, struck his foot and rolled into tbe not. Wellington, 2; Canterbury ._ 1. Wellington kept at it hard, Haigli being noticeable for somo good work. A few minutes later Robbie was given a hno chance to score, but ho was too hasty, and tho ball.flew over tho goal. The Wellington men were still hovering, in the circle when time sounded, leaving the tally—Wellington, 2; Canterbury, 1. I Messrs. Manning aaid Mackenzie controlled tlio rrame.

Tho visitors were entertained at a smolso concert by the local association last evening. Tliev leave for wangaliui this morning.
