THE HUTT RIVER.

DANGERS OF DEFORESTATION. Possible damage to the improvements that have been effected along the banks of the Hutt River was suggested by Mr. T. M. "Wilford in tho House of Representatives yesterday when lie "asked the Prime Minister a question without, notice. Mr. "Wilford said that ho had received.a letter from one of his constituents (whose- namo 110 had communicated to the Prime Minister) drawing attention to the results likely to follow if the Maymorn Timber Company wore allowed to denude the watershed of tho Hutt River of timber. An examination of the' topographical plan in tho District Survey Ofßco would show what the result was likely to be if the timber were cleared from the steep land adjoining the upper part of tho river. Since tho erection of- a stop-bank by tho. river board the bed of tho river had been raised by nearly two feet. Mr. Wilford asked the Prime Minister whether lie would communicate with the Under-Secretary for Lands with regard to what was being done on the MayYnorn Estato. It was important to prevent a greater accumulation of shingle in the river since the river-bed adjoining tho main bridge had already been raised two feet. The Hutt River had been brought into one channel by tho expenditure of a huge sum of money, under tho river board and a stop bank had been crected. If tho operations of the Tiver board were eoino; to be nullified by the operations of this company tho Government should intervene, and if necessary, issue a proclamation and take over the steep bank of which his correspondent had spoken. He had already communicated with the local bodies in tho district.

Tlio Prime Minister said that he would ask tho Under-Secretary for Lands to furnish a report on tlio position, and in regard to the result that would follow upon the operations of the Maymorn Timber Company, so far as tlio Hutt River and the Hutt Valley wero concerned. "When ■tlio report came in he would communicate with tho lion, gentleman. ,
