THE GAS AGREEMENT. The Lower Hntt ]3orougl) met lust, evening, the Mayor (Mr. Jv P. Bunny) presiding. Councillors llobbs, Ball, Phybcrs, Parsonage, Clendon, Mildrum, Hodgins, and Dawson were also present. The Major received a communication from thn 'Potono Council with _ ielcr ' enco to tlio gas agreement. "First of all," stated tlio Mayor, "they agree to' the price of coko and tar, with tlio stipulation that tlio tar is to be for our own use. They aro prepared to rcduco tlio price of gas to 3s. 9d., when wo reach 12 million feot inside of three years, and after that to be reduced to 3s. 8(1., if there is a still further consumption. They are sticking over this question of the nine million feet guarantee," continued the Mayor. - "Tho council cannot givo any guarantee. What if the people start to provide their own light? Wo can't givo them any guarantee." Councillor Dawson expressed tho opinion that tho gas consumption in the borough would never reach 12 million ' feet in tho next thrco years. _"I think wo should stick to our previous resolution passed at tho last meeting, concluded tho speaker. After further discussion, Councillor Dawson said: "I venture to think that if wo telephone Petone Council that wo stick to our previous resolution, they j will modify their conditions. Tiy it, any way," concluded Councillor Daw - boh . . Councillor Dawson s suggestion tnat tiho council stand by its previous reso--1 lution was put in tho form of a motion, and carried. . Tho Mayor then left the chair to ring
up tho Petono Council. Returning, tho Mayor stated that tho Petono Council "would reconsider tho matter. Tho Wellington Hospital and Chantablo Aid BoArd wrote stating that n caso of chicken-pox in tho Hntt Borough had been attended to, and the usual precautions had been taken. Received. A letter was received, from Mr. AN. o. Bennett, proposing to pay any fine and costs in connection with tho recent motor traps on tho Hutt Road, if tlio matter could bo settled wit-bout Coui t proceedings. Decided to notify Mn Bennett that tho council had no power to doal with tho matter now. In his report tho engineer (Mr. \\. J. Roche) reported on a stoppage of tlio pas which occurred on tlio morning of August 13, and affected the whole of the borough. Tho gas went off at 3 a.m., and was not on again until 10.30 a.m. Tho causo was attributed to an old syphon, which had become flooded with water. Water connections to clato total 1000, and 798 permits havo been issued t" data under tho drainage and sanitary by-laws. Tho Mayor moved the formfil resolution levying rates for tho current year. —Carried.
