RUGBY CODE, N.S.W. MEN REACH AUCKLAND.. (By Telegraph—Pr«s Association.) - ' Auckland, August 2-5. TJio Australian Rugby football touring team, which arrived by the Mahcno yostorday. was tendered a reception this morning by tho Mayor and officials of tho Auckland Kugby Union. Seeu after tho reception, Mr. 'Dyer (captain of tho visitors) said that they had a strong side, although eight of those originally selected wero' unable to mako .tho trip. Ten of the team visited California last year, and, taken all round, tho combination, was a good one. Tho forwards wore a fairly heavy pack, and tho backs were a nippy lot. The general opinion in Australia was that llugby had succeeded in regaining its lost position, and tho present team compared favourably with other teams that liad visited the. Dominion. Tho trip across was a fairly fine one, but several of tho team had suffered from seasickness, and preferred to stay on deck instead of going below for meals. .Mr. Morgan, tho manager, and two members—Thompson and Roberts—had unfortunately contracted influenza, and the two first-named wero confined to their beds. .

■ The team practised at Aloxandra Park this afternoon, and will practise again to-morrow morning. GILLESPIE SELECTED, THE GAP IN ALL BLACK TEAM. Charles Gillespie, -of tho Oriental Club, and Wellington representative lock, has been chosen for tho Dominion team for California in place of Atkjn-. son, tho West Coaster, who, as stated in 'yesterday's issue, is unablo to. mako the trip. liis inclusion will ploaso r local followers of tho game With' 1 whom 'he is cn undoubted favourite. CORNSTALK CALIBRE, THE OPINION OF TAKARANGI. Mr. Alex, 'i'akarangi, tho Wanganui representative forward who captained tho Maori team which Has recently returned from .Australia, w?is interviewed) tho otihtir day on tllio personnel of tho team from Sydney. "Their forwards," h© said, "aa-e nearly all tall, and, in tho wet, played'(right up to the New Zealand standard." After a pauso he added, "Wo couldn't stop tho beggars." And how about tho backs? "They aro oertainly a very fast lot," was tho reply, "and when they get going they take a power of .stopping." From tho names, can you give any information about individuals? —"Of courso one doesn't remember eveiyono ' ono plays against in a toair suoh as ours, but most of tho names are familiar. Cooney and Dwyea - aro tho full-backa. Dwyer is their crack man. The threequarter lino as a very fast ono. Amongst them I notice Carr arid Sutter (N.S.W).. and Melbusdh (Q.). Tho two first-named aro particularly slippery. Wogan and Tasker arc five-eighthsi Tasker is quite a lad, and ho cuts in well and should malce a namo for Ihimssl'f. Wood, . one of tho halves, is tho oldest playing visitor from a football point of viow, and, so far as I know, is tlia only ■player who has visited Now Zealand in a team beforo. Ho was across with tho 'Australian team in 1905. He is a ' sturdy player, quick as lightning round a scrum, and just as good as ever ho .'was. -

"Of the forwards," continued Takarangi, "Williams antl Murphy, of Queensland, are a fine pair; big and fast. H. George is a New South Wales player of the dadhing typo. Wornm is a New Zealaoider, who camo, I think from •Wellington. Ho is a good boy. I'V.hey is also a good man." '■TO PLAY AUCKLAND. , ( Mr. V. R. BOXING, MURPHY & KEYS TO-MORROW. _ To-morrow evening the second professional contest of tho season is being promoted 'by the local association, when "Hock" Keys, the Australian champion, mil bo pitted against Murphy, tflie locrfl feht-weight, in a fifteen-round contest, whidh promises to he well up to tho standard, set in any previous tournament. Tho official note from tho Wellington Boxing Association Btates that bbtii principals h*vo completed their training preparations, and those who have seen both at work aro satisfied that they ara in tho best of condition. The Aus-tralian has been showing very good form, and has put on considerable weight sinco his last appearanoo hero. This is borne out by his showing against such a.ii exponent as "Johnny" Summers, the English welter ohanipian.;" Murphy's last opponent was Ireland, from whom he wrested_ the. middleweight titlo, and this victory indicates that ho is ft formidable man in the light-weight class. Three amateur preliminaries aro also to bo staged'.

HARRIERS. On Saturday afternoon tho Wellington Club diverged somewhat from tho usual week-end prooedure, the cause being a social event tendered by tho ''Bills" of the club, and at which, considering the inclemency of tho weather,, thore lyas a satisfactory attendance. Proceedings were commenced by .a team's race, the "All-Bills" being challengers, antl tho club' defenders. The courso chosen was from tlio Seatoun tram terminus tea rooms through the tunnel, a circuit being mado of tho golf

links, striking the road by tho SeatounMiramar tram junction, which was then followed to .tho finishing point at Seatoun. The "Bills" led from tho start and captured first honours without much difficulty. At 4.30 p.m. tho moro enjoyable side of tho programme was commenced when, at the command of tho senior "Bill," the tables were fully manned. Sons and speech followed until 7.30 p.m.

BILLIARDS. >ALCOCK CRYSTALATE COP. Hho tournament was resumed lagt evening, before only a moderate "house, this being no doubt due to tho inclement weather. Tho first game, H. J. Simson'(Wanganui) v. P. Devino (Petome) ended in a victory for tho latter by .13 points. Simsoni took the lead, and held it until tho last 50, when his luck, whidli "had been in evidence all through, deserted him. Devine did not play with tho confidence %o did on Saturday, but nevertheless he is to be congratulated upon his win. Ho mado no breaks worthy of mention, while Simson was responsible for 29, 21, and 19. The second! game. E. W. Warren v. AV. Liptrott, proved _ an, easy win for tho former b.v 169 points. _ Warren, who' is olio of tho_ most finished' amateur cueists in Wellington, soon got into his stride, and scored rapidly, making runs of 17, 13, 28, and 40 in succession. His averago worked out at 10. His best efforts wero: 21, 23, 28, 31, 35, 34, and 40. Liptrott was responsible for 21 and 25. To-night at 7.15 o'clock G. Grimstone will meet J. Congdon. This is perhaps the most important match of the tourney. Grimstono is already well known and) from what has been seem of Congdon in Luis previous games a battle royal should ensue. At 8.30 Hamilton will meot Corson.
