FULL MENTAL HOSPITALS.
THE BUILDING PROGRAMME. ,Tho Minister in Charge cf Dospitnlo (Hon. R. H. Rhodes) waa interviewed yesterday by a reporter regarding the statement by Dr. Beattie that lie attributed the fact that ft female par ,tiont had been ablo to hanfj hersolf to tho overcrowding of the institution.
"I know' that tho mental hospitals are overcrowded," said Mr. Rliodes, "but tho Department is doing it-B best to relievo tho pressure. A new building is just about completed at Sunnysido (CliTistchurcli) and a new ward is also about completed at Tokanui. A contract has also been lot for tho erection of a now building at Auckland. Tho building scheme that has Loon commenced at Tokanui also provides for tho erection of further buildings. A number of patients will shortly bo -moved to tho now ward that has just been erected at Tokanui. 'We must keep 011 building," said tho Minister, "in order to provido for tho steady increase of patients, hut I am unablo to state at present wliat further provision in tliis direction will bo made bliis year."
