(From Out Epooi&l Corre»jond«it.) . —C— ; —» A good deal of important business will come up at to-night's meeting of the Borough Council. Tho Mayor has given notice to move that rates bo struck as follows:—(a) To provido the .interest on the drainage and streets' improvement loans of £13.709 16s. 4d., a rate of five thirty-seoonds of a penny in tho £; (b) to provido portion of tho interest and sinking fund on tho Consolidated Loan of £25,200, a rate of forty-one one hundred. and twentyeighths of a penny in the £; (c) to provide tho interest and 'sinking fund on tho Petono New Hutt Bridges' Loan of £5500, a rate of nine sixty-fourths of a penny in the £. Total special rates, 79-128 d.; total general and special rates,' 3-63-128 d. Councillor Findlay has given notice of motion as follows: "That the opinion of Mr. Martin, municipal solicitor, be asked as to whether, after borough lands as a whole are pledged as security to debenture-holders, or any system of money-lending, can any portion of tho security be cut out, or made not liable for a proportion or the interest payable, and if so what area would bo required to carry tho burden of liabilities." Other notices are as follow:— By Counoillor Findlay: (1) "That the motion allowing £3 per week to .tho borough'foreman bo rescinded, and that the sum be increased to £3 10s. per week." (2) "That tho custom of demanding a deposit before fixing a new motor or connection to gas supply be discarded, and that the gas manager and the Mayor use their discretion ro new customers." By Councillor Jones: "That the complaint brought before tho council by Mr. J. Piper, against the inspector of nuisanoes be reopened." Speaking at the NormandaJo Schoolroom last evening, Mr. T. Town send! (of Petono) treated! some aspects of the temperance quostion. He dealt principally with the growth of the movement from 1893 till the present, day, and he claimed that no. other 'reform had grown to such an extent. Ho reviewed the amendments to tho Licensing Act which had Ticen brought in since 1893, and ventured! the opinion that, ore long, a substantial reduction in the present majority handicap would bo made. There was a fa# attendance last night at His Majesty's Theatre, Petono, when representatives of the United Federation of Labour adddessed the public on tho party's policy. Mr. E. Whit-taker was chairman.
