SCOUR IN CALVES.
Dirt .is the chief cause of calf scaur, as filthy, poorly-lighted, and badly-ven-tilated quarters liarbottr disease germs in great numbers. Sometimes calf scours occur in cotagious . form, and then prompt measures will prevent serious losses. At the College of Agriculture of tho University of Wisconsin special precautions aro taken against scours. ' Not only" aro calves kept in well-lighted, and otherwise . sanitary quarters, but they aro fed regularly until four weeks old 011 21b: to 611). of their mother's milk three times daily. Care is taken to have tho temperature of tho milk as near that of freshly-drawn milk as possible, and to keep tho feeding pail clean. "In spite of all 'procautions," states ProfessoT G. O'. Humphrey, "we now and then'havo cases of scours among our calves. For the past two years wo hnvo successfully treated such cases as follow: As soon as symptoms appear, two to four tablespoonfuls of castor oil aro mixed with one-half pint of tnilk and given to tho calf. This is followed in four to six hours'by 0110 teaspoonful of a mixture of 0110 part salol and two parts subnitrate of bismuth. This dose ca.ll also be given with ouc-half pint of new milkj or tho powder can bo placed 011 the tongue, nnd washed down by a small amount of milk. The salol and snbliitrate of bismuth can bo secured from any druggist, mixod in tlio propc-r proportions at the time of purchaso, and thus the powder will bo readily available for uso at any time. As an additional precaution against contagious scours, it is advised that tho navel of tho new-born calf be wetted with a 1 to 500 solution of bi-chlorido of mercury (corrosive sublimate)."
