TEACHERS TO CONFER.
IMPORTANT MATTERS. SALARIES & BIBLE LESSONS. Salaries will como up for special mention at a meeting of tho Wellington branch of tho New Zealand Educational Institute to-morrow evening. A meeting of tho branch will also bo held 011 Friday when the following notices of motion will be dealt with:— Salaries. Mr. A. J. Harding is to move: "That this instituto expresses its opinion 011 tho question of raising teachers' salaries as follows: — "1. That 110 attempt should bo made to bring down legislation this session dealing comprehensively with teachers' salaries, as there is not sufficient time to givo the subject tho attention it requires. "2. That tho interests of the teachers and the cause of education in New Zealand would bo better served by an assuranco from tho Minister for Education that a comprehensive Education Bill will be introduced next session; such Bill to provide, among other reforms, for tho abolition of the present method of calculating teachers' salaries 011 averago attendance, and tho substitution therefor of a scheme of payment in which length of service, merit, and proved ability shall bo tho qualifications for advancement. "3. That in order to relieve cases of undoubted hardship tho Minister bo asked'to introduce a short Bill this session, raising all salaries under £150 to tho maximum of their respective grades, or to £150, whichever is nearer>
"4. That 110 scheme of salaries will be acceptable to tho teachers of NewZealand which depends in any way on the numbers attending the schools, or 011 any other circumstances over whichtho teacher has 110 control.
"0. That a copy of this resolution bo sent to tho Minister for Education, and to each member of Parliament, also to each educational instituto and branch instituto in Now Zealand, with a request that if approved it be then sent oil to tho Minister for Education." Bible-ln-Schools. Mr. A. H. Parkinson is to move: "That this district institute, while feeling bound in defence alike of tho national system of education and of the personal liberty of teachers, to oppose to the uttermost the programme of the Biblo^n-Schools'League, would welcome any effort on the part of the clergy to introduce into the schools of this district the Nelson system of Biblo lessons."
Mr. ■W. T. Grundy is to move: "That this institute protests most emphatically against any attempt being made to insist that women teachers shall wear a special dress when giving physical instruction."
