A fire occurred at 9.30 a.m. to-day in a boot sliop in Deo Street, owned and occupied by John M'Curdy. Ail addition was being made to tlio building and baps of lime bad been left near the wall. Heavy rain foil during the night and water fell on tho lime which caused the outbreak. The building was seriously damaged and tho stock suffered considerably from beat and smoke. The insurance on the stock in tho South British was £1400, in the New Zea-

land £800, and in "tho United £200. On tho building tlio risks were: South British, £450; Alliance, London, Liverpool, and Globe, and Standard £225 each. SCHOOL COMMITTEES. SOME.DEMANDS FROM TIMARU. Timaru, August 23. The response to an invitation from the Timaru School Committees' Association, delegates from other committees met to-day to discuss matters of common interest. Tho principal motions passed wero" that the School Committees' Association bo requested to circularise all committees in tho Dominion requesting them to bring, pressure to bear upon Parliament through tho respective members to increase tho amount of the incidentals allowanco to committees by at least twenty-five per cent. Tho second motion adopted was that of the Otago Education Board, urging an improvement in the position of the teaching profession, making it more attractive, increasing salaries, and liberalising the basis of superannuation'. A death from pellagra, the new disease reported at tho recent Mcdical Congress in London, lias occurred at Westport. Tho patient was a lady who had been ill for ten years. Her case had puzzled local medical men.-
