The officers of the steamer Matatua, which, arrived at Sydney recently from London, via Capo Town, reported that a roughly-constructed raft was sighted adrift off the Crozot Islands, and passed only a mile distant. It was built of logs lashed together, but a portion of tilio raft had broken adrift. There were no signs of. life, but the Matatua's officers bad not tho least doubt that tho derelict, craft was sufficient evidence of a tragedy of tho sea as yet untold. They think the raft was quickly constructed aboard some sailing shin which had lost all lior boats, and which was in a- sinking condition. A little later on a lot of drifting planks were passed. These had apparently como from tho raft, and all were encrusted with barnacles, indicating that they had been in tho water some time.
